We knew no one yet. But as time flew by We grew to know, How this school ran A now familiar flow. We met new people That we now love. There are none in this world That we’d rate above. There are many memories, Both good and bad, That mean more to us Than we’ve ever had. A part of us all Will be left here. The halls will always echo Our laughter and tears. Yes, the time has come To say good-bye. We soon will be leaving, Our paths now divide. But hold your head high And don’t forget this, We were the Indian River Class of “86.” Sliey Say As time goes by we look back To a time not long ago, Where life did seem so easy, The bad so far away. They say it made us stronger, The pain we all went through Of leaving all good friends behind And starting to make some new. They say it made us wiser, The homework day to day. It felt as if a punishment, As if there was no other way. They say we’ll understand someday, That time will tell us why. When the days get shorter yet And the years go sneaking by. They say when we’re as old as they, We’ll follow in their ways And remember what was said to us In our younger days. Theresa Beck Debra Gingerich $?Am MOST INTELLIGENT Tim Schell. Now there are drugs available to those who want them. In school dedicated teachers arc still striving to motivate and educate students so they will be ready for whatever path they choose after graduation. Mrs. Hogan Math ♦ There seem to be a lot more outside influences acting on the students and interfering with the learn- ing process — socializing has always been a big part of going to school, but today it seems more important than the actual act of learning. Respect for teachers has diminished, but the teachers dedication to education still manages to survive despite the odds. But the most serious and dire change since I began is that I’m 12 years older than I was then! Teaching has changed many times since I began in 1943. National Honor Society The Indian River chapter of the National Honor Society has been go- ing since its conception, shortly after the central high school was built. Students who are selected as members have been evaluated in four areas, referred to by the National organization as the keystones. These keystones arc scholarship, leadership, service and character. While each keystone has equal weight in selecting members, scholarship is the primary keystone, because grades are the basis for deciding who is considered in the other three areas. The National Honor Society chapter here at Indian River has pro- vided Marshalls for Graduation, serv- ed as tutors, been guides for visitors on career day and open house. The Honor Society is most proud of the facts that, through their fund raising, they are able to award a scholarship at the end of the school year. 99 Row 1: Tracy Morse, Gene Whitmore, Tracy Johnston, Tonya Kanitz, Alison Ryor, Cindy Mead, Tern Schell, Scott McConnell, Robbie Beirman, Marcie LaClair. This year we had another small, dedicated (another word for “insane”) staff that came through for all of us. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the peo- ple involved... This year’s Editor was Jodie Bums. After three years with the book, Jodie brought with her a great deal of experience. In many ways it was like having an extra advisor ... we’re really going to miss her next year. Our other editors were: Sue Looker Seniors, Chris Jesmore and Chris Petersen Clubs, JoBeth Fader Faculty, Tabctha Bartlett and Nicky Marcellus Sports, Sean Tumer Underclass, Pam Call Music and Scott Duncan and Tom Todi Photography. The following is a list of those who con- tributed greatly to this book (our apologies to anyone we leave out). I spent a very exciting time this summer on a farm in Wiesmath, Austria. It was hard at times but it all paid off in the end. My family consisted of three brothers: Jonan- nes, Peter, and Thomas, a sister Elizabeth. I recommend the AFS Exchange to everyone who is willing to learn many things about yourself and other places. Thanks to you all who made it possible. Auf Wiedersehen Tami PERU Hola (Hello) Peru is a country of great beauty and its people are very warm and generous. I shall never forget this past summer and the rewarding experience that representing AFS afforded me. AFS gave me a chance to see how the third world lives. I wish to thank everyone who made my trip possible especially my parents who always believe in me and my abilities. Maybe through exchanges such as AFS the people of this world will learn that we basically are all the same, we wish to love and be loved. Choa (Good-bye) Jennett 109 BRAZIL The most important thing I have done until today, was when I chose to go to the U.S.A. for one year. How I made this decision I don’t know, but I just told my dad that I was going to take a test for AFS and if I would pass I could go to the U.S.A. for a year. He accepted the idea. After the test I didn’t think I was able to pass it, but 1 did. Then I had to wait for 3 mon- ths to receive all the papers where I had to write down about all my life and stuff like that. After I had this done I had to wait for 7 more months to receive the papers from the American family. When 1 received those papers, I thought I was going to die! But later thinking with myself, I realized that if I would die I would never be able to leave to go to the U.S.A.! The last 3 months went very fast by the last week before I left to go to my new life, I thought that everything would be very easy; easy to say good-bye to my family, easy to pass a year far from home, easy to make new friends, easy to be accepted by everyone and easy to live in a new family. But in all these easy things I was wrong. The different things that I found here are the customs, the way everybody lives, and prin- cipally the food. After all these things became normal for me, I began to feel more comfortable. I became “so” comfortable. no Ill Row 1: Vic Delies, Kent Klock, Lance Ronas, Bill Lewis, Larry Neville, Scott LaClair, Stan Booth. This organization is dedicated to fur- thering the interest of the classics to high school students. Each year the organization sponsors con- ventions and the National Latin Exam. On the local level the Latin Club has had one fundraiser to date. Thanks to the people who purchased our flowers, the Latin Club’s Valentine Carnation sale was a huge success. With our money we hope to send a few peo- ple to the New York State Junior Classical League Convention in July. A candy sale is scheduled for the first week of April and a daisy sale is scheduled for Moth- er’s Day. The Latin Club also pays two dollars per person for each of the seventy-five students who have taken this year’s Na- tional Latin Exam. At the end of the year, the Latin Club will give an honorarium of $50.00 to the student who has the highest four- year average in Latin.
