Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1985 volume:

-----------------------------TIMES----------------------------- June 1985 Vol. 27 No. 1 the Yearly Newsbook A letter from the Principal I am most happy to reflect upon my thoughts and feelings regarding the graduating Class of 1985 in this edition of the In- dian River High School Year- book. Diversity, intelligence, sincerity, dedication, and hones- ty are among the attributes displayed by these young ladies and gentlemen. The members of the Class of 1985 have not chosen to dwell specifically upon activities of past years. Rather, they have explored new horizons and pioneered unique ideas such as “Alumni Night. Every graduating class from 1958-1984 was represented at this special reception held immediately following a home basketball game in January. This event gave past graduates the opportunity to share memories of their high school days. Perhaps the following quotation from a former alumnus best describes the mood of this occasion. “You just don’t realize the feelings hidden away inside each of us. Seeing my school, my friends and the kids of today brought both tears and laughter. I thank the graduating Class of 1985 for giving us “Old Folk,” the opportunity to share in this memorable night. Although weather conditions did not cooperate, a winter carnival had also been organized which highlighted competition in snow sculpture. The Class of 1985 will journey to Hcrshcy Park in Pennsylvania in early June for its senior trip. This will make the greatest distance traveled by any class in the past few years. A successful magazine campaign, a candle sale, a pizza sale, a donkey basketball game, and the senior and junior plays arc a few of the money-making pro- jects which have helped finance the Senior trip and the Prom, which will be held at the State Of- fice Building in Watertown. In addition, these young people have greatly contributed to our diverse academic, cultural and athletic programs. A high percentage of the 1985 graduates will enter institutions of higher learn- ing in preparation for future careers. Several will join the various branches of the armed forces while still others will utilize the basic skills ac- quired here or at the vocational center to earn a living. Individual talents will be greatly missed from those seniors par- ticipating in our music, art. agriculture, athletic, and other student related programs. It has been a sincere pleasure to work with you over the past six years. I wish each member of the graduating class success in all endeavors throughout life. _ _ , _ E. Isn’t it simply smashing to see a happy young couple like Rick Honeywell and Patty Looker? Of course Charles and I are happy ... at least that’s what the Enquirer says. I do love him. I just wish people would stop making jokes about his nose. Just the other day we were standing in line at a movie, it was raining, and a particular rude woman asked if she could stand under his nose to get out of the elements. Princess Di There are a lot of great couples you guys forgot to mention .. . how about ... oh no. they broke up. Well there’s . . .no, they’ve been fighting lately. Seniors are given the (privilege punishment?) of tak- ing the place of teachers and staff for the day. This year’s chorus is the largest chorus Mrs. Crast has had in her 12 years of teaching at Indian River. It’s a strong group and sings music from various periods such as; classical and Baroque as well as modern. We have good representation at Area All State this year. Fourteen students will be attending. Two representatives were chosen from Indian River to go to Con- ference All State which took place from November 25-28 and stayed at the Con- cord Hotel in Kiamcsha Lake, N.Y. After all, it’s the Color Guard that the crowd sees first. That’s when all the dedication and hard work show in the various routines that corres- pond to the marching band’s music. Members practice throughout the entire marching band season to perfect their style. Color Guard is presently engaged in fund raising activities to raise money for new uniforms. This past season the front row members received an award by the Northern N.Y. Parade Judges Association for being the “most spirited’’ color guard ensemble. The Student Council also supports many improvements in the school. This, coupled with the responsibility to undertake activities for the stu- dent body, authorizing fund-raisers, and projecting the positive image of Indian River, makes the Student Council very challenging for its members. My A.F.S. experience is something I will always look upon with fond memories and a bit of nostalgia. Travel- ing to a different area of our world, becoming a special member of another family, and living differently than the “American Way” enriched my personality in such a way and the people in it. Thanks to this experience, I can now look upon any situation or relationship from two different viewpoints. While 1 was living in the beautiful Ayore Islands, 1 realized that around the earth, people are pretty much the same. They may have different languages, different outward appearances, and different heritages, but the same range and variety of personalities exist everywhere. Also, I made many close friends, and anxiously await the day when I can return. Thank You, A.F.S.! Hei Hei (Hello) I spent eight weeks of my summer in Finland with a wonderful family. Thanks to A.F.S., I was able to meet new people, understand new ideas and opinions, and to see first hand another culture. Finland is a beautiful country, and my ex- perience helped me to appreciate my home even more. Thanks A.F.S. Time, June 1985 115 World Dear Friends: I find it very difficult to express thanks gratitude to you, for such a lovely year, spent among you. This year has been spent learning a way of life, different to that of mine at home, and you mine. 1 learned to live with other people and live with another family, yet we had shared the same affections that we would have for our own fami- ly. The students of IRCS have made my stay here memorable and I will never forget the students, friends, and my family for such a beautiful time. Thanks for the lovely and happy time which makes my love overflow with joy and gladness. The AFS program means a lot to you and me and thank you for sharing it with me. Love to all of you. Hola, I want to tell you thank you very much for everything you did for me. This year has been great and enjoyable. Here in the United States I learned a lot of things that I thought I would never know. Your culture and your life are so interesting ... the people are excellent and the food is great. This year was difficult for me, I know that my English is no too good but 1 tried and thanks for your help. To my family that accompany me in bad and wonderful times ... to all my friend that I made and that give me the opportunity to be a friend ... to all the teachers and persons that had been close to me, thanks for the special help. To all these people I want to tell you that I will never forget you and you will be always in my life, because I want to remember this as the most special year in my life. Adios amigos. The Indian River Chapter uses the Na- tional Keystones, as our guidelines for membership selection. These Keystones are Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service. Honor Society members serve as Graduation Marshalls, Career day receptionists and Open house guides. From our own fund raising projects, Honor Society awards a $100 Scholar- ship to a Senior student each year. Honor Society inductions are held twice a year.
