I don’t know how to say thank you to ail my Amer- ican friends for all that they have done for me during my brief stay at IRC. I will cherish the memories of this year for the rest of my life. I will always remember the friendship that teachers, students, and staff showed towards me. This year has given me a chance to live in an American society where I’ve been able to study many new subjects in school, espescially music, as well as the American way of life. I would like to thank my fabulous host family the (Cavanaughs, who took care of me in such a wonderful way. 1 felt at home with them right from the very beginning. Many thanks also go to my advisor, Mr. Berry and all of the AFS Club. If you don’t know where to go during vacation, come to Sweden and I will take care of you. Thanks again. Share the world-AFS. Hejda, Joy Our Exchange Students George Hendry This past year has been one which I nill never forget. A great many things stick in my mind : friendships I have found and will treasure; the friendship of the pupils, teachers and staff members of IRC. I will take back to Scotland such memories as the soccer, the Senior play and the Rock-a-thon. 1 would like to thank my wonderful family, the Kiechles of Philadelphia with whom 1 have shared many happy mom- ents. I’ll never forget the help I received from Mr. Berry my advisor and the whole of the AFS Club. During this year I have been able to pursue a great num- ber of subjects which are unavailable to me in Scotland. I feel that all of these things have contributed to my development toward being a better person. Thanks once again to the AFS Club who brought me here to IRC and to all of you in every grade w'ho have made my stay so worth while. The words of the AFS motto read: “Walk together, talk together, All you peoples of the earth, Then and only then, Can we have peace.’ Remember these words as you remember me. All the best, George, your Scots friend. 107 J.J.S. Americans Abroad Julie Huckley Jambo, Habari? Because of people around the world who care about relations between people of different cultures, 1 had the oppor- tunity to travel to Kenya, East Africa and live with an African family. I was very honored to be chosen and share in an A.F.S. experience thousands of other students share in each year. I had the pleasure of sampling not only one, but many different cultures all compacted in one small African country. The things 1 experienced were surely unique and the only way to fully appreciate it is to experience it yourself. Traveling half way around the world opened my eyes and made me grow in all aspects. I learned so much that I find it almost incredible. I thank God for clubs like A.F.S. and the opportunities they offer to all people. Thank You A.F.S. for caring. Kwa Heri, Julie Buckley “A.F.S. America is very different from Brazil. I like to be free to take classes that I want, in Brazil you don’t choose your classes. In Brazil you can leave classes whenever you want to. My American family is really great, they try to teach me about American ways. Tire students here at Indian River received me well. Thanks for making my stay in America pleasant.” Carlos Eduardo de Sottomaior Sampaio P.S. Here is the first time I’ve seen snow. The “Blizzard of ‘77” really gave me the chance to see what snow looks like. Chile “For me this exchange has a great value because the living experiences here in the U. S. makes me see the world and different life-styles. I believe that I will take back to my country many unforgettable souvenirs for the rest of my life, of my American family as well as from the other great family which is Indian River Central High School and I call it a family because there is understanding, unity and foy which exists between sudents as well as between the staff. This does not exist in many other educational institutions. I believe that this school gives and will continue to give great satisfaction to the people who live in this beautiful American land. My sincere thanks to the West family and to the school for having received me and for the hospitality during this wonderful exchange period. To all the students thanks for the warm reception and hospitality which was extended to me. I hope one day to receive all of you in my country and to correspond in the best way since you, too, deserve it. I will always remember them.
