JOSEPH DURGIN We, the class of 1972, proudly dedicate this year’s Ojequack to Donna Jacoby and Joe Durgin. We will always remember what they have done for us and how each of them has added a little more to our lives. In the few years we have shared with them, they have led us—not only as our English teachers-but also as our advisors. The play casts, especially, realize this; as we all shared joy and sorrow through the hours of planning and production. Their reward has been the satisfaction in knowing that each of us has grown a little more because of them. This honor we offer to Donna Jacoby and Joe Durgin is in recognition of their hard work and understanding. We hope that in our own way, each of us has also added a little more to their lives. 3 EXCHANGE STUDENT JAMILE BARBIERI Who am I? My mother says I’m the one with her head in the clouds; my dad says I’m the one who needs help with politics; Maria Tereza, my twenty year old sister, says I’m the one who likes to see a cowboy show; Valeria, my 13 year old sister says I’m the one who yells the loudest at home, and C'intia, my two year old sister, doesn’t say anything! She just plays with me. I come from Andradina S.P., a city with 60,000 people, in Brazil. My dad manufactures coffee, and mom teaches school! Since August 19th I have been living with Mr. and Mrs. Kent West, in Theresa. Together we have shared many happy times, which I will always remember. These few months in the United States, especially at Indian River, have shown me many new and beautiful things. 1 never knew red leaves before, or snowflakes-but I like them very much! I shall never forget all the help and friendliness that Indian River has shown me. I would like to thank my family for all their love, my friends for all their smiles, and AES for letting me have this wonderful experience! Love, Jamile 6 1 TO SHARE HORIZONS THAT ARE NEW TO US 7 TO WORK TOGETHER DAY BY DAY 10 TO LIVE; SO MUCH OF LIFE AHEAD n 14 TO SMILE BEFORE THE RISING SUN 15 OH YES! WE’VE JUST BEGUN! We, the staff of 1972 Ojequack, welcome Dr. William Dadey as our new supervising principal. Dr. Dadey joined our administrative staff in July, re- placing Mr. Claude Hutchinson, who retired. They are Jamile Barbieri and Patti Sheldon. Since Jamile’s arrival, she has become in- volved in many school and social ac- tivities. Following Patti’s return, she has been sharing her experiences with our communities. Each girl presented an assembly to the school showing slides and telling of their country’s customs. AFS CANDIDATES LORIE HECK BARB SEITZ In the fall Lorie Heck and Barb Seitz were selected by the AFS Adult Com- mittee as perspective exchange stu- dents. These two girls were among many qualified candidates who were considered for application. Barb, who is a senior, applied for the summer program. Lorie, who applied for the summer and school program, is currently a junior. One or both of these girls will be notified of their acceptance in early spring. We wish them the best of luck. 93 PLAY CAST Row 1: (kneeling) C. Vesperman R. Jones Row 2: (standing) G. Hewitt L. La Porte R. Stevenson P. Liscomb N. Eddy J. Hamilton H. Dobson J. DeGroat K. Drake “The Night Is My Enemy” by Fred Carmichael was presented by the Junior Class of Indian River Central School in the high school auditorium May 20 and 21,1971. This marked the first time in the school’s history a class had attempted to present a full-length tragedy in a professional-type production. Traditionally, drama at Indian River had been merely a method of raising money for class activities, but with “The Night Is My Enemy” drama at Indian River became an experience in the art of drama that few who shared it will soon forget. The task was indeed a great one, for just months before the same group of people had made dramatic history with the production of Indian River’s first serious drama, THE NIGHT IS MY ENEMY. On November 18 and 19 the senior class met the challenge and proved that at least for them the play was not simply an activity but an art that the class of ’72 will always be remembered for. 97 PERCUSSION SECTION (L. to R.) Although the team had a very frustrating season, they have a lot to be proud of with the spirit with which they played. It’s easy to be a good winner, but it takes character to face dis- appointment without bitterness. And this alone is one more thing to be proud of in a year that seemed filled with criticism. Everyone loves a winner, but Indian River Central can also claim pride in finishing a season without look- ing back in anger, but looking forward to another season next year. 122 Indian River hosted its first Christmas Basketball Tourna- ment this season. With four teams participating the tournament began December 29 with Herman-DeKalb playing Heuvelton in the first game. Our Warriors faced Otselic Valley in the second game and won. The consolation and championship games were scheduled for December 30 at 7:00 but had to be canceled until December 31, 1971 at 1:00 P. M. In the consolation game Heuvelton was victorious over Otselic Valley. The Warriors took the second game from Herman-DeKalb winning the tournament. At the end of the championship game a trophy was given to the Warriors and an All-Star team was chosen. Two of our War- riors named to this team were John Robinson and Gary West. Mike Patterson was given honorable mention for playing an out- standing game. The most valuable player award was given to Indian River’s Bob Folsom. 123 CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT JR. CHAMPION STUART GILLETTE The Yearbook staff would like to dedicate this page to Stu Gillette—NYS wrestling champ. In his junior year during the 1970—1971 season, he placed second in our league, in the 138 lb. wt. class. He went on to the sectionals and continued to win. He then went to the state finals at the Syracuse War Memorial, where he represented Sec. 3. There he defeated his first two opponents, with final scores of 18-4 and 10-4. His toughest match was in the semi-finals, where he finally won 5-3. In his final match he led all the way and ended with a 14-10 score and the championship. He became the first first place state champ from our school and also from our league. Now Stu is a senior and is again a wrestler. He is doing very well and is unbeaten in our league. We know that he will keep up the good work and go just as far again this year. Stuart Gillette, second from left, NYS first place 138 lb. wrestling champ. 129 JUNIOR VARSITY SPORTS Football, First Row, 1-r: E. Youngs, B. Papineau, R. Mcllroy, D. Ricter, T. Maloy, S. Slate, J.
