To him we owe our gratitude for his pert in the creation end success of the Indian River Central School. He has been of great service in guiding us through the proper paths of education. — Hastings, Educator 44 Years, To Retire ■ Indian River Districti Principal To Be Suc- ceeded by Percy E. Ball. Philadelphia. Dec. 3.—James A. Hastings, who has served as teacher and administrator in 'north country schools 44 years, will retire as principal of the In- dian River Central school dis- trict at the end of the current 'school year. He will be succeeded by Percy E. Ball, Evans Mills, who has been principal of the district’s junior-senior high school near 'Philadelphia since July 1, 1958. Mr. Hastings is now complet- ing his 44th year of service in area schools. He taught at Smith- jville, 1915-16: at Rodman Union ,school, 1917-1925; principal at Redwood High school. 1925-1943; principal at Antwerp High school. 1943-1955; and district principal of the Indian River centralization from 1955 to the present. Mr. Hastings is a native of Sackets Harbor and received his early schooling there and in Wa- tertown. He did three years of undergraduate study at St. Michael’s college in Union City, N. J., and completed work for the bachelor's degree at St. Law- rence university in 1932. He ob- tained his master’s degree at St. Lawrence in 1941. He has been affiliated with the New York State Teachers associ- ation since 1925 and served on its board of directors from 1942 to 1944. In 1953 he was elected president of the North Central zone. He is a member of the Jef- ferson County Frontier School- masters; the New York State Central School Principals’ asso- ciation; the American Association of School Administrators; and the New York State Association of Secondary School Principals. Locally, he has served on the Antwerp Youth commission, is a member of the Antwerp Crosby library board, and is a charter member of the Antwerp Rotary club. 2
