To our surprise and Mrs. Gilmore's delight, all three prizes came to our school Later we sponsored an assembly featuring an exchange student from Norway. In the spring we had a paper drive, which proved quite lucrative, and later our Junior play-Date Bait-with two casts A large percentage of the class participated in extra- curricular activities such as basketball, football, cheerleeding, baseball, wrestling, track, .and all branches of the music department. We had an eventful first year Last fall we came trooping back for our final year of high school, many of us with severe cases of senior-itis Our advisor, Mrs MacAllister, without whom we would be strictly nowhere, informed us that we were going to be busy. She meant it, tool After electing our officers. President Thomas Lucas, Vice-President Philip Hughes, Secretary Ann LaFave, and Treasurer Lucille Jewett, we flew into a very successful magazine sales drive, in which the seniors went to the dogsl See pioture on page 28 to prove this I Then we ordered our rings in hopes of getting them before Christmas. Our Senior play-Men are Like Streetcars-again with two casts, was quite successful. We have been among the charter members of many new organizations-the Library Club, for seniors exclusively the F.T.A and the Student Council We also worked hard on the staff of the Drumbeat , our school paper We nearly staged a riot when our rings didn't come on time, but everyone is more or less satisfied now. Another activity which has kept everyone busy, and Mrs. MacAllister frantic, is this yearbook of 1960. We hope it is a success Of course we again participated enthusiastically in all sports and musical activities• We have had an interesting time in high school, and we would like to offer our thanks to all the teachers, and Mr. Ball, who have helped us greatly during our two years in the new Indian River Central High School Prophecy continued- Richard Sharkey is the head salesman for the Curtis Publishing Company. Crosby, Coach Kane A NOTE FROM COACH KANE'S OFFICE Indian River has completed its second year of varsity wrestling and has shown that in the near future, I.R.C.S. will have experience enough to be a powerful contender in the Ontario League. In our two years we have had our share of victories and our share of defeats. Development of the program takes time and the need of freshmen and sophmores will be sought for a better team, but knowledge of the sport is in its infancy now. This year the team was co-captained by Bob Nadelen (180) and Bub Brassard (135). Together with Dan Williams (112) and Eugene Benware (120), they are the only returning veterans from lasts year's fine team. Actually, this year was necessary to rebuild since 6 from last year's team were seniors. Regardless of the lack of experience, I.R. Wrestlers have done a tremendous job winning 10 matches in the first two years. Probably the brightest spot on the team wes the 112 lb. class, currently hale by Danny ? illioms. A fine boy, he went undefeated during the year winning the league tournament. Bob Nadelen contributed a tireless effort wrestling in the 180 lb. class and doing a fine job. Along with Brassard, the 3 of them were finalists in the league tournament. As far as the team outlook is concorned for next year, it looks much brighter than at this same time last year. Larry VanTassel (95) Paul Neuroth (112) Don Neuroth (127) Pat Sprague (133) Sterling Swartout (145) Al Shaw (145) George Smith (154) Keith Rudes (168) Jim Decker (140) are all strong and will be fine wrestlers for Indian River. 44 Senior Band Row 1--P. The underlying reasons for the formation of the Student Council are (l) a feeling of urgency to make democracy function as it should in view of increasing world tensions, (2) a realization of the fact that intelligent participation in democratic action must be learned, and (3) an increasing faith in the contributions that young people can make to democratic thought and action. The purpose and function is best stated in its preambles We, the students of the Indian River Central High Sohool, in order to stimulate and develop a healthy school spirit, to encourage and maintain participation in school activities, to promote personal initiative in school projects, to foster a spirit of cooperation amongst the faculty and student body, and to recommend ways and means by which our school may be improved, do ordain and establish this constitution for the Student Counoil of the Indian River Central High School, 48 Newspaper Staff Fl00d' • ■ R°- 2--K- Han. S., and we hope it will become a firmly established tradition here. The FTA is open to any member of the eleventh or twelfth grades who is interested in exploring teaching as a oareer. It is chartered by the National Education Association and the New York State Teaohers Association. Under the excellent guidance of Mr. George Merkley, our advisor, we have had a very successful beginning with sixteen members, all of whom are active and oo-operative m Oiir officers are i President, Judy Miller; Vioe President, Mike Finley; Secretary, Ann Myers; Treasurer, Jim Moore; and Historian, Ellen Glenn, fie feel that ours is a very valuable organization, as it helps us to decide whether or not we would be suited to the career of teaching. We are able, as we visit various classrooms, to realize the responsibilities and problems as well as the oppor- tunities of teaching. While members are allowed to skip some of their regular olasses to visit classes in their field of interest, they are expeoted to maintain a good quality of school work. Application for membership may be filed with the secretary at any time during the year, but new members are formally acoepted only at the October and February meetings. We ere very happy to have been the Charter members of the FTA in our school, and we hope that all future members will find this organization as helpful, interesting and enjoyable as we do. 50 Library Club Row 1—J. The purposes of the club are to promote interest and understanding of the library, encourage good reeding, to learn the functions and operations of the library and to aid students end teachers in their use of the library. At the first meeting the following officers were elected—President, Katie Whitmore; Secretary, Betty Copper; Treasurer, Sally Hutton; Reporter, Marcia McGill. One of our projects this year was selling pencils and pennants. The profit from these, instead of club dues, will be us d for purchasing library club 'ins. Every member assists in the library work two periods a week • Our duties include the mechanical prepr-ration of new book's, desk duty, shelving books, and filing catalog c rds. 51 IN ONE EAR AND OUT THE OTHER GYM HEADS UP BOYS DOING MONKEYSHINES 53 THE UNCAGING AT 3il5 FEEDING TIME 54 s The Rest Activities Senior Stan, Give Ellen oack Her Slip Little Drummer Betty Starry-eyed Yfhat Pretty Aivis is Gone What 11 Vie Do K wn The Hatch Babies 2n Acting Like A Senator On Rou te To El Paso s It Thursday Jimmy?
