SPARK OF DESIRE hl It all starts within oneis heart, That Spark of desire to do your part. Blended with a tear, a smile, a frown, That nearly makes those dreams tumble down. 5 Those first months, perhaps that entire first year, the path can be seen clearly only directly beneath your feet. Looking ahead lies a twisted thorny branch- entwined path. Our picture of a registered nurse is merely bright glaring colors and disturbing textures upon an unbound canvas. The signs and symbols begin to appear--signs and symbols that lead us along the pathway to the service we can one day render unto our brothers. An irregular pile of books Your own study nook, . ' It's study time lSo begin that climb. Oh the first quarter textbooks, they are mostly a detailed review. Except for anatomy, math of drugs, and. . . and. . . Those bottom rungs of the ladder are fairly ' easy to reach. Then along comes second quarter freshman year. . . then junior blocks. In the weariness of midnight oil, up too late for breakfast and too busy for supper, the legs of student nurses become almost too heavy to lift up the ladder. Mid junior year the signs and symbols become better established; their meanings become clearer. x A long well lighted hall The flashing light is your call. Many the signs that appear Each patient needs you near. The cap, the spotless white uniform and the combat-boots they call nursing shoes, these now appear on the icanyas as the colors and textures take form. Not yet does the nurse have an identity, at face of her own. Pick up your roots and go on. New adventures for you lie beyond. Fill your mind with the knowledge you yearn It won't be long, then you return. Seniors can look to the last and final miles. The nursing path stands unique above E other professions. With it, each of three forks must be travelled down by the senior student. At the end of each journey comes new insight, that she would lack had her education kept her to only the main stream of the path. The canvas is complete; the nurse who is pictured is you. Rest weary one, you the graduating San nurse. No matter where you go from here you cannot forget the memories that lie within the walls of a nursing school on Truman Road. Wherever you go remember the new group of freshman student nurses t that face what you have conquered. These start as you did, with only a Spark of I desire within their hearts. - Thelma Eagle
