After graduating from Trinity Lutheran School of Nursing in Kansas City, she took her post-graduate course at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. She then went to Menorah Hospital Where, after a few years, became supervisor in surgery. After working as a nurse assistant to Dr. W. B. Black, and then as head nurse of the surgical unit at Trinity Lutheran Hospital, she came to the San as supervisor of surgery. She has served in that capacity since 1948. She has been a good example for student nurses as well as the many others who work around her. Her basic concern is for the patient. Some of the well-deserved words used to describe her are fair and loyal. We feel honored to dedicate this Sanilog to Miss Carlson. R.WME .mngzwgwng This new experience is both exciting and frightening to the senior student at first because she is separated from her home, school and best friends; but she will soon be wrapped up in the new routine and she will come to develop a new closeness with the girls in her block. Then, too, there are visits from the chaplain, which makes the San seem a little closer. She will spend three months at Childrens Mercy Hospital where she will learn about the growth and development of children, plus the many accidents and illnesses that may strike a child. For one month she will be. affiliated at Mt. Vernon Tuberculosis Hospital where she will learn more about this disease and give comfort and companion- ship. She will spend three months at St. Louis State Hospital where she will learn about psychiatric nursing and care for those who cannot function in a normal society. By the time she is through with her affiliations she will have gained a new maturity and a greater understanding of people - as well as new friends and new experiences.
