we LLPJQ With all due apologies to William Wordsworth and his you to know The Happy Nurse . Who is the happy nurse? Who is she That every girl in white should wish to be? Hers is the generous spirit, who when brought Among the real tasks of 'life hath wrought Upon the plan that pleased her youthful thought. Whose high endeavors are an INWARD LIGHT That makes the path before her always bright. Who with natural instinct to discem What knowledge can performiis diligent to learn. Abides by her resolve and stops not there But makes her moral being her prime care. Who agreed to go in company with Pain and Fear and Disease, miserable train! Turns her necessity to glorious gain In face of these doth exercise power Which is human nature's highest dower Controls them and subdues, transmures, bereaves Of theirpbad influence and their good receives By objects, which may force the soul to abate Her feeling, rendered more compassionate. - Is placable, because occasions arise, So often that demand sacrifice. V More skilled in self knowledge, even more pure As tempted moreg more able to endure As more exposed to suffering and distress Thence also, -more alive to tenderness. Shecomprehends her trust and to thesame Keeps faithful with singleness of aim. This is the happy muse, this is she That every girl in white should .wish to be. Happy Warrior we would like

ma Wafer The Independence Sanitarium was established in 1909 by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as a place of refuge for the sick and afflicted . The hospital opened its doors in October 1909. The Sanitariurn School of Nursing was established in 1910 in order to give the Latter Day Saint girls a chance to receive their nurses' training under church influence. The School of Nursing has graduated thirty-nine classes, having a class graduate each year since 1912 except in 1913 and 1935. The present incorporation of the hospital took place in 1929 when funds were raised by public conscription and matched by the R.L. D. S. church funds for the new hospital. The new incorporation changed the name of the institution to the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital and increased the membership on the Board of Trustees. The basement and the first three floors of the hospital were completed and opened for use in January 1943. Following the opening of the new hospital, the old San was converted 'into a modernistic nurses' home with classrooms and laboratory facilities in the basement. Prior to this many different buildings near the hospital have served as nurses' homes. At one time the third floor of the hospital was used. The faculty of the School of Nursing grew gradually with the employment of the first part-time instructor in 1926. Before that the students attended Junior College in Kansas City for four months to obtain most of their classwork. At present there are 5 full-time instructors and many part-time ones including some of the staff doctors. The School of Nursing has reflected the different points of view concerning the different methods of teaching beginning with ward instruction, changing to classwork, and finally to a balanced schedule of classwork and floor duty. The School has re- sponded to all who are qualified to enter regardless of religious affiliation or belief. The School looks forward to a future of moulding young women into a well-trained profession as mature individuals with a dream in their hearts and a desire to serve humanity to the best of their abilities.
