ma Wafer The Independence Sanitarium was established in 1909 by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as a place of refuge for the sick and afflicted . The hospital opened its doors in October 1909. The Sanitariurn School of Nursing was established in 1910 in order to give the Latter Day Saint girls a chance to receive their nurses' training under church influence. The School of Nursing has graduated thirty-nine classes, having a class graduate each year since 1912 except in 1913 and 1935. The present incorporation of the hospital took place in 1929 when funds were raised by public conscription and matched by the R.L. D. S. church funds for the new hospital. The new incorporation changed the name of the institution to the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital and increased the membership on the Board of Trustees. The basement and the first three floors of the hospital were completed and opened for use in January 1943. Following the opening of the new hospital, the old San was converted 'into a modernistic nurses' home with classrooms and laboratory facilities in the basement. Prior to this many different buildings near the hospital have served as nurses' homes. At one time the third floor of the hospital was used. The faculty of the School of Nursing grew gradually with the employment of the first part-time instructor in 1926. Before that the students attended Junior College in Kansas City for four months to obtain most of their classwork. At present there are 5 full-time instructors and many part-time ones including some of the staff doctors. The School of Nursing has reflected the different points of view concerning the different methods of teaching beginning with ward instruction, changing to classwork, and finally to a balanced schedule of classwork and floor duty. The School has re- sponded to all who are qualified to enter regardless of religious affiliation or belief. The School looks forward to a future of moulding young women into a well-trained profession as mature individuals with a dream in their hearts and a desire to serve humanity to the best of their abilities.
