She has given of her time and talents for the molding of young women into mature, capable, and alert nurses and citizens. In appreciation of Miss Butterworth do we respectfully dedicate this 1950-1951 Sanilog. we LLPJQ With all due apologies to William Wordsworth and his you to know The Happy Nurse . Who is the happy nurse? Who is she That every girl in white should wish to be? Hers is the generous spirit, who when brought Among the real tasks of 'life hath wrought Upon the plan that pleased her youthful thought. Whose high endeavors are an INWARD LIGHT That makes the path before her always bright. Who with natural instinct to discem What knowledge can performiis diligent to learn. Abides by her resolve and stops not there But makes her moral being her prime care. Who agreed to go in company with Pain and Fear and Disease, miserable train! Turns her necessity to glorious gain In face of these doth exercise power Which is human nature's highest dower Controls them and subdues, transmures, bereaves Of theirpbad influence and their good receives By objects, which may force the soul to abate Her feeling, rendered more compassionate. - Is placable, because occasions arise, So often that demand sacrifice. V More skilled in self knowledge, even more pure As tempted moreg more able to endure As more exposed to suffering and distress Thence also, -more alive to tenderness. Shecomprehends her trust and to thesame Keeps faithful with singleness of aim. This is the happy muse, this is she That every girl in white should .wish to be. Happy Warrior we would like OPQLUOI' We are building .... More mature personalities to take their place in an ever-changing Society. We are building ..... . Nurses to promote general health and well-being for themselves and all those they con- tact Qphysically - mentally - emotionally - spirituallyj, to prevent disease, and to care for the ill in the hospital - in the cf' e - in clinics - in the doctor's office - in industry - on the battlefield. ' ' We are building . . . The future wives and mothers, of the Church, who we hope,wi11 actively participate in family, church, and community life so that Zion may be redeemed. ' ma Wafer The Independence Sanitarium was established in 1909 by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as a place of refuge for the sick and afflicted . The hospital opened its doors in October 1909. The Sanitariurn School of Nursing was established in 1910 in order to give the Latter Day Saint girls a chance to receive their nurses' training under church influence. The School of Nursing has graduated thirty-nine classes, having a class graduate each year since 1912 except in 1913 and 1935. The present incorporation of the hospital took place in 1929 when funds were raised by public conscription and matched by the R.L. D. S. church funds for the new hospital. The new incorporation changed the name of the institution to the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital and increased the membership on the Board of Trustees. The basement and the first three floors of the hospital were completed and opened for use in January 1943. Following the opening of the new hospital, the old San was converted 'into a modernistic nurses' home with classrooms and laboratory facilities in the basement. Prior to this many different buildings near the hospital have served as nurses' homes. At one time the third floor of the hospital was used. The faculty of the School of Nursing grew gradually with the employment of the first part-time instructor in 1926. Before that the students attended Junior College in Kansas City for four months to obtain most of their classwork. At present there are 5 full-time instructors and many part-time ones including some of the staff doctors. The School of Nursing has reflected the different points of view concerning the different methods of teaching beginning with ward instruction, changing to classwork, and finally to a balanced schedule of classwork and floor duty. The School has re- sponded to all who are qualified to enter regardless of religious affiliation or belief. The School looks forward to a future of moulding young women into a well-trained profession as mature individuals with a dream in their hearts and a desire to serve humanity to the best of their abilities. ,wa AFR? . .iz if ififffigi Q 1 2 an AIIMINISIRMIUN nl -. ii I he P el gs lg Y f 5 in i. 'Tis rumored there is a man in her life so perhaps before too long she will be tak- ing that fatal leap in said boots, . I talked with Mrs. Dew. who was also visiting at the San. She was leaving soon for Mars via 'va Strato- Clipper to explore the man situation there. Did you know she is now flight nurse for The Two Headed Pigmy Lir1eS ? Aileen Maynard and Kenny were married last month and they have a lovely ranch-type home in Sugar Creek. Who knows she may win the Pulitzer prize after alll Patricia Keeney married the 72 year old President of The First National Bank in Boston, Mass. I did hear she was resigning as President of The American Nurse's Association to devote her full time to playing the role of housewife. ' Esther Cline continues to wonder which of her latest heart throbs she will marry. She is doing private duty at the San. and in her spare time she sings at the Cocktail Lounge at the Hotel Continental in Kansas City, Missouri. Remember Delores Hawkins and way back in probie days when she used to say, that someday she was going to be in charge of the Obstetrical Floor at the Sanq? Well, she has been in that capacity now going into her fourth year. ' Hilda Nortonen recently welcomed her second set of twin daughters. She is living in her native New England. I had lunch with Ruby Telgemier at the airport in Kansas City while I was waiting on my plane. She has been Superintendent of Nurses for the past five years at the Veteran 's Hospital there. Bonnie Milburn has taken Miss Gulmi's place at the State Hospital in St. Louis. I am wondering if she is continuing to have members of the student council check rooms twice weekly? Remember our days there, and the beaten path up to the solarium window? I had a letter awaiting me upon my arrival here from Ramona Lew. She has been appointed director of the Florence Nightingale International Foundation. What with her broad experience, having worked at various times in England, France, and her native Hawaii, I am sure this appointment will be another stepping stone to her successful career.
