.7 Our Assistant Principal of Instruction, Mr. Griffin, comes to our school from Virginia Beach Iunior High where he taught Math and served for a year as Community School Consultant. While at Virginia Beach Iunior he also estab- lished a tutorial program for math stu- dents. Mr Griffin also taught at Louise Luxford Elementary School. Mr. Griffin is in charge of instruction and co- ordinating curriculum. Mr. Griffin's philosophy is to assist students to meet the problems of life. Mr. Griffin attended N.C. State, UVA, ODU, and the Naval Academy. z Zawya! Independence junior High School is very fortunate to have as our Principal this year, Mrs. Waters. Mrs. Waters taught Social Studies at Plaza Junior High for three years and served as an Assistant Principal at Princess Anne High for three years prior to coming to Independence Iunior. Mrs. Wat- ers is responsible for the general adminis- tration of school affairs. Under Mrs. Waters' leadership, Independence junior High has benefited greatly this year. Mrs. Waters' philosophy is that we stimulate students' curiosity to such an extent that they want to learn. It is in this way that young people prepare themselves not only to earn a livelihood, but to enjoy intellectual and rec- reational activitiesf' Mrs. Waters is a graduate of William and Mary College. ff? Mr. Deviney, our Assistant Principal of Administration, came to our school from Cox High School. While at Cox, Mr. De- viney taught Social Studies and was Direc- tor of Student Activities. Mr. Deviney is quite familiar with the students since his responsibilities include athletic co- ordinator and discipline. Mr. Deviney's philosophy is to assist young people in their development in becoming responsible young adults. Mr. Deviney attended East Tennessee and received his MA degree from William and Mary. 10 4: f . K X S 62W if Virginia Beach is able to maintain its high standards of education because of the lead- ership of our Superintendent, Dr. Brickell. Under Dr. Brickell's leadership, innovative and energetic iprograms are continuously implemented in our schools to enable stu- dents to cope with an ever changing world. In addition, Dr. Brickell has initiated cur- riculums which have created vivacious cen- ters of learning in our schools. This year three new junior high schools as well as various other school improvements have been added to further the instructional program of education. 'tl
