MILLER The tardy bell rings, there is a clang of lockers, and throughout the building the familiar voice of the principal can be heard as he gives the regular morning announcements over the inter com. This is only the beginning of Mr. Miller's overflowing daily schedule which will not slacken until the last bell has rung. Marshall Miller guides the students in his friendly way, listening to their problems, coordinating their classes, and trying to make each one of them happy. His philosophy, that the school is for the students, is exemplified through his cheerful, fair-minded at- titude while working with the students. Mr. Miller's interest in the youth of Independence does not stop at the boundaries of the school's cam- pus. He is a leading personality in the Wagon Wheel District of Boy Scouts. Before becoming principal of junior High, he was an algebra teacher at this school. When asked to comment on his twenty years of guiding the students of Junior High, Mr. Miller re- plied, One of my greatest satisfactions is to see Junior High boys and girls grow into well adjusted young people. LOUIS MAN NEN Before coming to Independence, Mr. Louis Man- nen taught in Belton, Missouri. Formerly a teacher of shop and algebra at Junior High, he assumed his duties as vice-principal in 1955. Mr. Mannen counsels students and assists Mr. Miller in the numerous duties connected with keep- ing Junior High School functioning smoothly. His goal is to help the students realize that their future success and happiness is primarily their re- sponsibility, that knowledge acquired from properly directed social life as well as from textbooks lays a foundation for the building of a successful life. iw fwaa 'Phr- ! s gr R 3 X . H! :W 564 To the eighth and ninth graders of junior High, English offers training in speaking, reading and writing skills. It attempts to acquaint- the student with the best of literature, both short stories and poems. Much of the work consists of a survey study of grammar and other basic skills such as spelling and writing. The upper photograph shows an eighth grade English class learn- ing about the facilities available in our library. Many of the eighth grade English classes participated in this activity. In the picture below, a ninth grade English class portrays one of the old English ballads as a part of their study. 1.1-ati xl, Miss Weatherford's a lg e b r a class listens attentively as the fun- damentals of algebra are explained. They are algebra, eighth grade math and ninth grade math. Eighth grade math is required, but ninth grade math is an elective. edema The field of science offers a wide variety of interests for the imaginative student. Both eighth and ninth grade girls joined this organization. The main activity of the Girls' Glee Club was to entertain the student body at assemblies. This year the glee club presented a major part of the Christ- mas assembly. The year was climaxed by singing in the annual Spring Concert which was given in April. The student body enjoyed a variety of selections from this group. A few of the songs that they sang were Yankee Doodle, Come Ye Thankful Peo- ple, Come, and Willie. With songs such as these the Glee Club was in great demand throughout the year. The very able president of Girls' Glee Club was Deanna Donelson, and the vice-president was Beth Stockton. The secretaries were Donna Dobson and Charlotte Dieckman. The treasurer was Jo Ann Fincher, Miss Shirley Post was the combination di- rector and club sponsor.
