Wlieii asked if he had a message for the stu- dents, he answered, I feel that now is the time that young people should avail themselves of every op- portunity to further their education. Today, as well as in the future, we need trained minds in order that our nation may be enabled to cope with situations at home as well as abroad. 1 ,,fV L- , A 'V,, V , V' i - i I , r , i- fwfr ff A 'Q , . pf 17 Q 15 A ff 2 I I ' ' - ' Q: . Millet, out very capable principal, has been in his present position for twenty years. Before becoming principal, he taught algebra here. Besides being a member of the Kiwanis Club, Mr. Miller is proud to be District Commissioner of the Three Trails District of the Boy Scouts of America. When interviewed, his comment was, My routine is always a variety, and there is never a dull moment. Each day finds him working at the tremendous job of seeing that Junior High School runs smoothly and operates effi- ciently. His daily routine includes listening pa- tiently to problems of students, seeing that schedules are carried on as planned, coordinat- ing the day's work by means of regular an- nouncements over the inter-communication sys- tem, and taking care of any of the numerous other items in the life of a busy junior high school of nearly one thousand students. Each spring, just before the close of the school year, student enrollments are taken for the coming term. With all this information before him, the, principal is busy during the summer working out classes for these enroll- ments, seeing that books and other supplies are on hand by the beginning of the fall ses- sion, and preparing class schedules for teachers. When asked what some of his responsi- bilities are, Mr. Miller replied, Trying to makeheveryone happy. Qualities he likes to find in students are pleasing personality, cooperation, school spirit and loyalty, and fairly good grades. Mr. Miller, day by day, sets a fine example for the students by being cheerful, sincere, and fair minded. Louis Mannen Vice-Principal Our vice-principal, Mr. Louis Mannen, hails from Montrose, Missouri. He received his college education from Missouri State College at Warrensburg, Missouri, Colorado State College, and Kansas City University. The present eighty members were selected for such qualities as originality, scholar- ship, dependability, initiative, and school interest. The chief activities of the club are publishing the school paper, the Echo, and the yearbook, the Cub. Both of these enterprises afforded 'much work and ex- perience as well as enjoyment. The newspaper is published bi-weekly. Assignments for the paper were given out by the editors to the club members, who in turn did interviewing, if neces- sary, and wrote the articles. After assign- ments were in, Miss Sarah Dallam, the Penn Club sponsor, and the art and press editors were seen hours before and after classes getting the paper compiled and printed. The annual staff, composed. of about ten members, also spent long hours in working in small groups on various phases of the yearbook with Miss Pauline Nich- olls, the sponsor. The work included write-ups, advertising, identifications, art work and lay-out. Mr. Eldon Hart, with the assistance of two camera club mem- bers, was responsible for the photography of the book. Other activities of the club included attendance at the Jackson County Publica- tions conference at Manual High School in Kansas City. A picnic and skating party were planned for the close of the year, A contest was sponsored this year, as inoother years, during the Christmas sea- son. The entries included short stories, art work, and poetry. Winners in the stories were Diane Bates, first, Susan Lightcap, second, and Janet Lukens, thirdg for ninth grade. Under the direction of Miss Grace Rowe, the ninth grade Junior Drarnatics Club had a highly successful year in speech work. Functioning through the speech classes, the club has performed at numerous civic organization meetings, schools, and assemblies. These included programs at a Kiwanis luncheon, a one- act play, More Perfect Union , to ern- phasize Education Week, a variety pro- gram at the Southwest grade school P.T.A. meeting, a complete speech program at the annual Christmas assembly, in which the one-act play, What'll We Give Dad? was presented, and the Optimist Club speech contest in which a number of boys participated. The annual P.T.A. Nites Out program in charge of Miss Rowe is a presentation' featuring dances, musical numbers, pantomimes, readings, and plays. Speech students presented two one-act plays, Three on a Bench and Justa Buncha Spinach . The proceeds of the two-evening performances went to the P.T.A. Association fund. One of the looked-for events of the Junior High calendar is the annual speech department three-act play, scheduled for the latter part of April. Soon after the three-act play is presented each year, the speech students celebrate with a dinner to climax the year's activity and to honor the outstanding actor and actress of the entire school term. These honors are awarded by judges who attended all the speech programs of the year. Eighty-nine enthusiastic students who comprised the eighth grade division of the Junior Dramatics Club held their meetings the second and fourth 'Thursdays of each month. Eighth grade members as- sisted in selling tickets for the three-act play and supported the dinner given to honor actor and ,actress of the year. With their sponsor, Miss Rowe, and the co- sponsor, Mr. Parrish, they presented a one-act play, After the Ball , at the Nites Out program, a one-act play in assembly, and numerous skits, pantomimes, and in- dividual numbers at various times of the year. There were seven different vocal groups that provided beautiful music -for assem- blies and night programs as well as af- forded members an opportunity to sing together. The student body, visitors to assemblies, -'civic clubs, and- others have enjoyed hearing these students sing at various programs. Like other school clubs, most of the vocal groups were..extra-cur- ticular activities. X Mixed chorus, boys' glee club, the boys' quartets, and the ninth grade girls' en- semble were directed by Miss Anna Marie Smith. Girls' glee club and triple trio were directed by Miss Shirley Post. Some of these students appeared on the annual Nites Out program. The mixed chorus was composed of two ninth grade classes with a total of eighty-nine members. The accompanists were Karren Albers and Ann Kelly. The uniformity of the girls' white blouses and dark skirts and the boys' suits and bow ties made the large chorus an attractive picture at programs. Football games wou1dn't be the same without the 125 enthusiastic students who make up the Pep Club. Their enthusiasm ancl school spirit is an important factor in any Junior High game. The membership of Pep Club is open to freshmen students with an M , or above, grade. The snappy uniforms in school colors, blue and gold, worn by cheerleaders Linda Beatty, Gayanne Cleary, Linda Clements Mary Ann Harris, Judy McCormick, Carol Sue Mikes, Iris Utz, and Jeannie Williarn- A son were very attractive. These eight girls were chosen from a large group of girls who tried out at the first Junior High football game. A person coming into the building be- fore school, or staying late after school, could often have heard cheers coming from all parts of the halls. The cheer- leaders, supported by the Pep Club, con- ducted pep rallies on the northwest cor- ner of the playground at noons or the day before a game. OTT SECONDARY CUSTODIANS Mr. Robbins and Mr. Pennell Mr. Rockey, for a number of years first floor custodian at junior High,'was sched- uled to go to the new Ott Secondary building, but ill health prevented his working. The seventh grade students had the enjoyment of occupying a new, attractive building. Harry Ward, first floor Harry Johnson, second floor Truman Ziegenhorn thlrd floor V Junior High owes a token of gratitude to the hard working custodians, Mr. Ward 7 Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Ziegenhorn. They were at the building long before school began for classes doing the tasks necessary for a successful day. The job of seeing that the building was warm, clean, and in order was no small one. Many repair jobs kept them busy during the day, too. After school they were busy sweeping the halls -and rooms and preparing the building for another school day.
