study skills. . Best in the State of Kansasn describes the study skills laboratory at ICJC. Students may improve read- ing speed and comprehension, build their vocabulary, learn to skim and scan for facts, and build skill in at- tacking science and mathematics assignments. Listen- ing and reading are taught by use ofa tape recorder as well as printed material. The student must listen for a particular piece of information and then read for the facts. Included in the equipment is a reading eye cam- era which makes it possible to determine how much a reader back tracks in his reading. The instructor devel- ops and interprets the Film. An early diagnostic test enables the instructor to determine the appropriate individual rate and level of vocabulary for each stu- dent's attack. Library facilities are being enlarged to accomodate the 4,000 books to be added during this year. 1500 were added to the 11,398 volumes already in the li- brary to bring the total to 12,898. Students are privi- leged to pass freely among the open shelves to seek what they wish to use. Students enrolled in Oflice Techniques are privi- leged to have the latest and best of equipment at their Fingertips. New IBM Selectric typewriters make possi- ble the teaching of the key punch skills because of a special keyboard. Working at their individual speeds and reading levels, these students are thrilled by their progress. Each booth is equipped for several activi- ties. Students must enroll in ei- ther Developmen- tal Reading or English Composi- tion lb and 2b to havethistraining available,

languages . . Using the language lab to practice pronunciation, Sharon Potts lieftl, Warren Wood and Collette Martin Moore strive to conquer the French language, Mrs. Kolleen Overman, instructor, eavesdrops in the back to check their progress. One of the first modern language laboratories in the State of Kansas was installed at ICJC. Since that time, additional stations and hundreds of tapes have kept the equipment up to date. Spanish and French are both offered to college students. Students in Graphics 1 prepare themselves for careers in drafting or other engineering connected fields. This course is another of the practical arts taught here. Business management attracts a good many young men. Salesmanship, business machines, economics, business law, small business manage- ment, business correspondence, organization and administration. retailing and accounting are among the courses offered. 10 People interested in art, whether for fun, as interior decorators, or as a vocation, will find courses to Ht their needs at this college. Courses included are Intro- duction to Art, Design, Drawing, Painting, Water Color, Lettering and Layout, Introduction to Com- mercial Art among others. Women, wishing to take some ofthe courses in home making in preparation to be home demonstration a- gents or to take their places as home makers, may take courses in foods, meal planning and service, clothing, and marriage and family. Students interested in writing for publication may enroll injournalism courses and help in publishing the newspaper, The Buccaneer, or the literary magazine, Flair.
