V 1,-1-WAN, u 'W W 43 Toward the Future Looking toward the future, the editors of your Communico see many advances which are being considered for the junior colleges of Kansas. The expected increase in enroll- ment is already reflected in the enrollment of Independence Community College, and the State legislature is considering the iunior college and its future as the Communico goes to press. For these reasons the Communico staff chose the forward look as the theme for this 1965 yearbook. Renita Blankenship, art editor, created a design which would represent this theme. The two points of the design represent the wider separation of the high school and college divisions. This separation is progressing as is noted in the separated Student Councils and other organizations which had until this year been combined. Standing as a physical symbol of lCC's progress, the new Student Union provides a much needed place for socializing with friends over a cup of coffee or lunch. . jf ff Published by the Yearbook Staff of Independence Community College Independence, Kansas 'E 'Sf fig, Q 2 M2 3' ,t if :HH ,.-,N Y Q Wi1f?f STUDENTS LEAVE the newStudent Union of lndependenceCommunity with friends for a test, indulged in a friendly game ot chess or eaten College. Completion, earlier scheduled for December, wcis drugged out until February. MEMBERS OF THE BOARD of Education are: Georgia Lee Rockwell, clerk, Francis Potts, Dave Dennis, Mrs. Dorothy Beahm, president, Lonnie N. Wood, superintendent, Dr. Albert E. Bair, Jack Sanders, and Ralph Osborn. Communico Is Dedicated to Board Members The Board of Education of Independence Schools meets once a month, but then there are special meet- ings called to hire new teachers, replace old teachers, prepare budgets, decide teachers' salaries, and con- sider many other things. These professional meri and women have taken time away from their private lives to prepare for and con- sider the future education of the students in the Inde- pendence school system. These men and women, though, do not forget the needs ofthe community. Mr. Ralph Osborn, appeared as Colonel Pickering in the play MY FAIR LADY. We, the high school and college students of ICC thank you for the long hours and hard work you spend to make ICC the institution of higher education that it is. Thus it is with great pleasure that we dedicate this 1965 Communico to you. Dean-Principal: Fred Cinotto Neil Edds, assistant dean-principal, works per- sonally with students in the high school divisiong however he is always ready to help any student in either division. During Mr. Cinotto's absence, he efficiently takes over the reins of lCC. Administrators of ICC Are Busy, Responsible People Students at ICC hold Dean-Principal Cinotto in high esteem. He is not only a good administrator, but his value is also recognized by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. He has been serving as a member of a committee on accreditation which examines schools making application for membership in that organization. The committee recommends their acception or rejection on the basis of that examination. Assistant Dean-Principal: Neil Edds CMS. R. STEWART pnnnmasquanwun Boyd Talley, director of guidance Many problems arise during the school year which leave students perplexed. Boyd Talley and Kenneth Wilson are always ready and willing to listen and give a word of advice and encouragement. Besides personal advice, vocational guidance is available. Helping students apply for scholarships and other awards is a part of the depart- ment duties. The counselors work for the advancement of the students at all times. Aptitudes and interest tests are given to enable counselors to understand each person individually and guide him into a field where his strong points and inter- ests will enable him to excel. Good Counseling Makes Transfer to Other Schools Easier College entrance requirements are taken into consideration when the stu- dents are making plans to transfer to another school. The counselor and stu- dent set up a schedule of classes which will transfer to the best advan- tage in his particular field. Among the tests given for college entry are the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, American College Test- ing Program, College Boards, NROTC and the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Examination. Kenneth Wilson, counselor , 6 G wk Office Staff Keeps College Machinery Running Smoothly MISS MARY SELF, manager of the college bookstore, helps many stu- dents in their acliustment to a new school life at I.C.C. ln addition to her many clerical duties, she super- vises numerous study halls in the I.C.C. library and serves as the attendance clerk for both college and high school divisions. MRS. LORETTA WATTS, college bookkeeper, keeps l.C.C.'s finances in order, as well as pro- viding a cheery smile for all around her. She also spends many hours helping students by giving them information about various school activities. .sst. LL: MRS. BEVERLY HUDSON, the Dean's secretary, spends many busy hours in the I.C.C. office doing secretarial work. Besides this work she provides the students with information in answer to their num- berless daily questions concerning the general school activity. K5 PREPARING ONE of the many delicious meals she serves at ICC, Mrs. Eva Cooper mixes one of her special recipes. Second semester she served as manager for the Student Union. College catalogs, brochures, report cards, stationery, office formes and many other items are printed in ICC's printing plant. Student Christian Fellowship offers an opportunity for the ioining of all faiths in a weekly period of devotions. The organization has no recorded membership, but students feel free to drop into the meetings at any time. Special programs for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter are prepared for College assemblies. The group meets in get-acquainted party each fall, Students, faculty members, local ministers, visiting evangelists and business men furnish inspiring talks for the meetings. Christmas affords an opportunity for members to sing carols in the foyer at least once during the season. FACULTY MEMBERS often drop in to share weekly devotions with ICC's students.
