'-1 ' A 2.6 Wednesday night, February 23, at about 8:00 P.M. a fire was discovered in the In- dependence High School. In less than two hours the roof had caved in. Students and faculty alike combined forces to battle the blaze, but by 4:00 A.M. only sagging brick walls surrounded the smouldering ruins. Loss was estimated at :B500,000. Insurance on the building amounted to S300,000. All lockers, books, and equipment in the school were destroyed. Valuable records were damaged. Friday, February 25, was to have been moving day for the Lincoln Junior High students from their old building to the new Jefferson School. High school students, after an enforced vacation of two weeks, took over the new building. The junior high was forced to remain in their old building, which has been condemned foranumber of years. The old saying, I wish that darn schoolhouse would burn down is no longer re- peated by the students - - - many of whom watched the fire with tears in their eyes. ACTIIIITIIS J. They are required to work hard, Several of these soloists have sung at community functions, to join in vocal music activities. A new group in our school last year was the a cappella choir. Independence High School can be proud of the fact that we are the only school in the Walyiac conference that has such a group. In a school of our size it is unusual to find such a group. This past year the a cappella choir had fifty-three members. The accompanist was Judy Risdon. Those wanting to sing with this group must be willing to work and put in some outside time for rehearsal and concerts. The purpose of the group is to foster better music groups in school, get more interest in music in school as well as the community, to encourage participa- tion by more students in music groups and to recognize those students who perform well. The a cappella choir next year will have about forty members. The members are chosen by the vocal music instructor and the principal. The a cappella choir sang for KWWL-TV on October 18, 1954, also for the annual high school Christmas program, December 20, 1954. It also sang for the high school Open House, November 8, 1954, the Spring Concert, March 27, and baccalaureate services at the Presbyterian Church, May 22, 1955. The mixed chorus had thirty-five members, mainly freshmen. The accompanist was Anita Cone. This group worked mostly on assisting persons to sing better. It sang for the annual Spring Concert, March 27, 1955, along with the a cappella choir and other groups. The glee clubs were small this year due to schedule conflicts. These groups worked on conference music festival material and other selections. All vocal groups participated in the Wa.Mac Vocal Music Festival in Independence at the Jefferson Junior High School gymnasium, Saturday, March 5, 1955, 692 students from all eight conference schools were in attendance.
