QASS PRGPHECYX Sailor Reveals Occupations of 1950 High School Graduates The sharp stinging blast of the bugle the sound of men rolling from their bunks was the first thing I heard on the morning of J une 1, 1960 Maybe it was my ten years of experience in the Navy or the fact that we were dockmg in the good ole' USA that made me hit the deck at the very first sound We were all to get 30 day leaves upon dockmg a.nd I thought perhaps I d get a chance to go back to Independence and look up my old school chums It was about 11 o'clock when we dropped anchor and the following day I was walking down the street in San Francisco with my leave papers, reading the latest edition of the ' Boom , America s most popular magazine which was edited by CARL GOSSE of good old IHS, when who should I run into but a foreign correspondent back from Alaska WALLY JOHNSON It was good to see Wally so we dropped into a corner drugstore to talk over the good old days We were so busy talking that we hardly noticed the soda Jerk standing by our booth It was none other then DELORIS STRIPES our old class mate Suddenly remembering I had to catch the 2 o clock rocket ship, I quickly slipped on my Jet propel'ed boots and before I knew it I was at the a1r port I was almost ready to refuse to participate in this whiz bomb trip to Iowa, when I found that our own HERBERT TIFFANY was in command of the ship After a convincing conversa We were soon on our way and exactly 32 seconds later we had a breakdown over Yellow stone National Park and so we had to glide m easy Almost immediately two girls came along riding horses and who should they be but PAT GHERE and MARIAN DOWNING They took me to the ma1n office to see JOHN KIDD the director of the park, and his chlef overseer, RUSS ELL BEEBE Figuring at least a day of my leave would be wasted waiting for repairs, I was glad to run into JUNIOR AXLINE, now part owner of the AXLINE McGILL boat constructing company Luckily he had his latest 1nvent1on with him a combined ship and plane and he was able to get me to Independence in a few hours Imagme my surprise and delight to find I was in time to take in the Buchanan County Circus To my amazement I heard Pickle in the middle with mustard on top coming from our own FLOYD SCHANKE You can't possibly conceive the shock I had when I walked 1nto the Sideshow to see ' JO HARRINGTON and CONNIE HARVEY doing their famous black face act After chattmg with Jo and Connie I left their tent I walked into the big top about ten mmutes early so I pulled out the latest Conservative Naturally being in the Navy I was interested in world peace so I turned to the UNO page I was relieved to read that the great crisis is over as The Sinatra, DARRELL FRATZKE, and Crosby alliance has finally been signed the world is again at peace Then came a great fan fare from the band conducted by none other than our own RONALD GITSCH, and out came JEAN MUNSON the bareback rider It s rumored that she is engaged to DEAN BUTTERFIELD, the thin man Suddenly before I knew what had happened someone slipped off the rafters and fell right into my lap and pushed their cotton candy into my face and there was BOB CORNWELL We talked of the good old days when everyone seemed to live Southwest of town cause that's where everyone went after a dance Just then someone threw something down my neck I turned around and there sat BILL MELVIN cracking salted peanuts Later that night I flashed into a restaurant I checked my hat, left sock, and my ear muffs The hat check girl seemed quite astonished but not as astomshed as I was when I noticed it was PI-IYLLIS ANDREWS The head waiter JACK SOENER showed me to a table I was astomshed more than ever when he summoned a waitress to serve me and who should appear but BETTY BAYNESS Featured m the main floor show was MARILYN KIDD a ballet dancer, and her partner JOHN KUPER My steak finally came and it was terrible I demanded to see the manager and to my surprise it was VERNON MAIN He immediately took me to see SHIRLEY BLACK, the chief cook Shu'ley msisted it was the cow s fault so I finally excused it . ,, ' I I 1 ' ffm' X r x -Q' ,xr N tj -i im . . , . . I was walking out of the restaurant and who should I run into but JIM LOCKHART and TIM VAN REE it seems they had the world's most famous pool hall, all due to Jim's many errors. They invited me to go with them to see RICHARD SCHMIDT defend his heavyweight title of the world and they told me that his manager was none other than CHARLES GHERE. After the fight I went into the drug store and sat down to get a coke. JOYCE HAKANSON, the clerk, turned on the radio in time to hear DARRELL SPECE speak on Will the whiz bomb ever replace our rocket ships , when in walked Admiral ROBERT ORR and BARBARA JO PEARCE the beauty operator from up the street As I strolled out the door, I met JACK THOMPSON and one of his show dogs from his own kennels My leave was Just about up so I started back to the coast I was hitchhikxng along a country road when a car pulled up and Sgt MORRIS VAN VOOREN asked me if I wanted a ride About a hundred miles southwest of Des Moines I stepped onto a bus and I was surprised to find BOB HANSON driving It Sitting across the aisle from me was MABLE CHASE MARY JANE DLOUHY, and WANDA ESCH on their way to their dude ranch When I reached the coast I found I had some time left so I strolled down to the beach one afternoon and there was MARTHALENE COULTER and JANICE ZIMMER in dungarees I ve heard they own the biggest sand sifting company on Long Beach I laid down on the sand and started to read the paper and there it was PAT HALL founder of the bald heads a new ligious cult in California After an afternoon at the beach, I was walking down toward the base when who should I run into but LOIS WELLS and CAROLE GRIEF They were working in a public library and enjoying their work very much I remarked about Carole s lovely hat lt looked like a flower pot with a daisy growing upside down She told me it was created by ED CORNWELL a famous fashion artist I told the girls good bye and kept walking to the Water front At first I rubbed my eyes and could hardly believe it but there sat MARJORIE ABRAM DONNA HALL ETT DONNA Mc FEE and VIVIAN VAN ETTEN fishing After talking with the girls I dis covered that they owned, along with MARJORIE SHANNON the largest fish pickling factory in the U S I looked at my watch and knew my leave was just about over I walked up the gang plank and really had to laugh If only we seniors way back in 1950 had been told where we would be today we would never have believed it And with tlus final thought, as the sailor of 1960 I, DONNA HAUTH ended my leave 55,25 A45 Z!
