emoried Memories, memories, Dreams I love so true, O'er the sea of memories l'm drifting back to you.' Montgomery County High School was estab- lished and located at Independence, Kansas, by a special act of the legislature March 5, 1897, on a site donated by the city of Independence. The building was formally accepted by the Bocrd of Education on June 6, 1899, Mr. Samuel M. Nees becoming the first principal. The building, one hundred and fifteen by eighty-five feet and three stories high, was made of pressed brick and native sandstone. School in the new building opened on September 4, 1899. Twenty-two students were graduated in 1900 in the first class. An addition to the original building was built in 1912. In 1922 Montgomery County High School be- came Independence High School, with Mr. Nees being named principal, which position he held until his death in 1922. Since that first graduating class in 1900, thousands have attended class in the building which was named Nees Hall in honor of its first principal. Nees Hall sees this year the last graduating class that will ever pass through its halls and classrooms. In 1954 the eleventh and twelfth grades join the thirteenth and fourteenth grades in the new Independence Community College.
