FOREN SIC ACTIVITIES For the first time in many years forensic activities were resumed on a moder- ate scale at I. H. S. This was due to the fact that debate was made into a regular academic subject and also due to the enthusiasm of the nine juniors and one senior who set the ball rolling. The national high school debate question was Resolved, that the President of the United States should be elected by a direct vote of the people. Early in the fall the group attended a debate clinic at Kansas University for the purpose of familiarizing themselves with the debate question as Well as the tech- nique of debating. All of the debators participated in the Coffeyville invitational tournament in December and fared remarkably Well, winning two-thirds of their debates. Later in December one team entered the invitational tournament at Emporia. The season was concluded with the District tournament held here in Independence. Winfield Won the district and later took second place in the state tournament. Since the debaters Were completely inexperienced, Mrs. Goheen, their instructor, was very proud of their showing. The debate squad included: Carol Jane McMurtry, Cammie Ruth Funston, Charlene Moore, Alice Jo Schulze, Joan Doss, Donna Benton, Susie Dye, Pat Hudiburg, Douglas Kalber, and Bill Gooldy. THE TNDEPENDENCE STUDENT The Independence Student, the official school paper, is printed twice monthly and is distributed to student subscribers of the junior high, the senior high, and the junior college. The reporting and editing is done entirely by the students of the journalism class and the students of the printing classes. The Student has a quarterly rotating staff headed by an editor-in- chief who is chosen from the members of the class. He is assisted by a staff on vvhch every class member is included. The Student strives to give its readers interesting highlights about the events that occur in and around the school. It reflects the activities of the school, and bolsters school spirit. One of the more elaborate issues this year was the one covering the Silver Anniversary of the junior college.
