Today, in 1949 there are leaders who guide our youth in their quest for knowledge. Among these leaders are the teachers. On these pages are presented the faculty of I. H. S. The 1948 football season brought more than a little recognition and prestige to Independence-for it was the 1948 edition of the Bulldog football machine that rolled to an undefeated season in the SEK league play to give Independence its first SEK league championship since 1932. Carl Nelson's Bulldogs culminated a brilliant season by pinning a 25-0 defeat on the Coffeyville Tornado in the last and pay-off game of the season, to slip in under the wire ahead of the hard pressing Parsons Vikings. The team featured great spirit, hustle and never ending will to win. The 1948 Bulldog eleven was noted for its evenly balanced combination of a powerful line and a set of hard hitting, running and shifty backs. . The team had numerous stars, but gained their SEK league laurels through the fine play of the team and squad as a whole. The necessary spark plug to move the 'Dogs to final victory was rotated frequently. It was this unusual player make-up that enabled the '48 Bulldogs to return the SEK league football crown to the halls of the Orange Sz Black for 'l he first time in 16 years. Independence Caney ...,. Kebert Near Moberly Braden Chase Dy 'A Winning seven and losing seven SEK league games, the 1948-49 edition of the Independence Bulldog basketball team enjoyed a better than good cage season, under the watchful eyes of coaches Bob McHenry and Kayo Emmot. The seven-seven split in SEK loop competition was good for a share of the league's fourth place, with the Pittsburg Purple Dragons. This was a considerable im- provement from the seventh place pinned on the Bulldogs in the 1947-48 cage Wars. Highlighting the cage season on the local high school front was the 48 to 38 upset victory by Independence over their arch rival, Coffeyville, in the class AA regional tournament. The victory marked the first time that Independence defeated the Tor- nado in 15 attempts. An encouraging factor in the past cage season was the brilliant record compiled by the Bulldog B team, who were victorious in 15 out of 16 starts. The outlook for the next basketball campaign promises to find the Independence Bulldog high up in the SEK league-or even possible league champions. Phyuus umm EDITORS Betty' Tobabcn liarbara Cooley The Student , our school paper, is pub- lished by journalism students under the supervision of their instructor, Miss Lora Todd. All the work of publishing a paper is studied and put into practice during a regular class period. Printing the paper proved to be quite a handicap this year, owing to the fact that we have had no printing teacher to super- vise the printing. This problem has been solved by having the Independence Daily Reporter set the type and hiring a press man to run off the paper on the school press. All the make-up was done by the students and instructor. The Student strives to present school news in a manner which is interesting to students, instructors, and patrons of the school. lt also contains feature stories and guiding editorials. The staff is rotated every quarter to give the journalism students an opportun- ity to gain experience in different phases of newspaper work. Advertising is solicited by students from our local merchants, who are always most cooperative. Each year the paper sends represent- atives to a journalism conference which is held in Lawrence, Kansas. Students who attended the conference this year were Phyllis Guyer, Betty Tobaben, Wally Brann, and Bill Pendleton. Approximately 1300 papers are printed each issue some of which are mailed to advertisers, former students, all boys in the service, as well as being distributed to students and teachers in the system. The Student has an exchange list of papers of 50 other schools, and is a mem- ber of The National Scholastic Press As- sociation. The first step that was taken to start the high school an- nual of 1949 on its Way, was the selection of the staff members by the faculty. There are 16 students on the staff, 14 seniors, and 2 juniors. The staff has chosen The 49er as the theme for the an- nual, recalling, a century later, the days of the 1849 gold rush. 'lhis year, in addition to their duties of editing an annual, the staff sold the books, as they Weren't included on the high school activity tickets. The staff sold over 600 books through a poster campaign. A cover was chosen at an earlier meeting of the staff, and then the real Work of editing a yearbook was begun. Pages were planned, pictures were taken, copy Written, and many other details were taken care of by the staff members. Most of the school photographs We1'e taken by Mr, Lee, a faculty member, and the staff would like to take this oppor- tunity to thank Mr. Lee for his contributions to The 49er . Advertising for the yearbook was solicited by the student ad collectors from the very cooperativeIndependencemerchants. Much credit should be given to Mr. Fitzgerald, a1't instruc- tor and sponsor of the annual, for his efforts in supervising the editing of The 49er . The choruses main purpose is to present musical programs When- ever they are needed. They have presented special programs for the public and also have appeared before some of the civic clubs during the past year. A girls' trio and a boys' quartet also have made public appearances during the year. One of the highlights of the year occurred when the mixed chorus attended the music festival at Fort Scott. There they joined voices with approximately 600 other youths from the schools of Southeastern Kansas. M 11 T, Q K Q5 XL at J W M T f . We're taking curtain calls in remembrance of a happy and busy year of dram- atic activity. First semester The Footlights Club produced three assemblies: the Iola-Independence pep assembly, the S. E. A highlight of the year was to HUI101' me alumni. lt was held a formal Christmas dance at the Kansas Hotel. cooperation with the Col- The Club produced 'Uazz and Minuetn which later won first place at the district drama and speech festival. During the year two radio shows were produced over KIND. Two one-act plays, The Man in the Bowler Hat and George W'ashington's First Defeat, and innumerable ieadings were presented by club members to various church and civic organizations. Work projects successfully completed were the re- decoration of the dressing rooms and the recovering and painting of the interior set. Under the leadership of Charles Chipman, president, and the guidance of Margaret Goheen, sponsor, the final curtain for the 1948-49 season has closed upon a most suc- cessful year for the Footlights Club.
