It is one of the largest classes in the history of the school. It is the first class to do all of its senior high school work in the school as reorganized into a senior high school. The superior advantages afforded by a generous public in the form of new and adequate facilities for Science, Physical Educa- tion, Manual Arts, Art and Design, and school assemblys of every character have been enjoyed by this class. An annual by its nature is primarily devoted to the extra curricular life of the school. This life during the course of the class of 1926 has been fraught with much Worthwhile endeavor of varied char- acter and with a large degree of success. This annual records successful achievement with individual credit to a proportionate number of this class in forms of athletics in which high schools participate. Yours have been years of marked expansion in musical work as a school and we have been Well represented in music by a large proportion of the class. In debate and scholastic contests the work of our school has been especially successful. ' The spirit of cooperative endeavor as a class, as a school and as a student body and faculty has been all that can be desired. The latter is a matter of special gratification to those responsible for the supervision and administra- tion of the school and depends to a very large degree upon the spirit and leader ship of the senior class We are not flattering when we say that the class of 1926 is a superior class It has been a pleasure to associate with this splendid class as a whole and with all of its officers for whom we have the klndest per sonal regards The memory of the class of 1926 will always be a choice mem ory with the faculty and the writer As you leave us we are sure you will not forget the high school and that when opportunity affords you as citizens will champion its interests 1n the ser tice of other high school generatlons The faculty is interested in the personal and community achievements of this class It could not be otherwise because if We as teachers are successful it must be through you and your larger service to your day' and generation be cause of contact with us We extend to you best wishes for all of the good things of life and extend our wishes in all confidence of a very large measure of success Sincerely J F Hughes Page 16 ss, f-+ INBEPENBEQCE KKKQK 'J L u '- . 1 . . . . . . Courses include Grammar, Composition, Classics, Debate, Dramatic Art, Journalism, Foreign languages including three years of Lathr and two each of French and Spanish, are offered in the Senior High School. More than one thousand pupils each year receive the benefits of instruction in these languages. Arithmetic is taught in the seventh and eighth grades, and special branches in higher classes. Three credits each in Algebra and Geometry are offered, and all of our graduate-s receive at least one years work in each of these. These various classes give excellent training in the fundamentals of all mathematics. American History and Civics are taught in the Junior High Classes, and advanced courses in these subjects are carefully worked out for the higher classes. Added to these this department offers extensive work in Modern History, U. S. Constitution Social Civics and Ecomonics. These are all very useful courses. Glee Clubs, Chorus, and other organizations in vocal music are taught in both high schools. Band and Orchestratraining ofa.very high type are given totany boys and girls who will try out, This very largely explains the popularity of our music deparunent. , In Hlouse-hold Arts interesting courses and highly instructive are given, All phases of Domestic Art work employed in the home are taught, and many attractive articles are made by the girls, while classes in cooking are learning, practicing, and helping throughout the year. Those cafeteria lunches testify daily to the good work donein dass The Manual Arts classes are instructed in printing, woodwork iron work and mechanical drawing. Some artistically made articles are on display each spring, and The Student, and Orange and Black are products of our own printers. A realinnovadon hischool work wasthe hmroducwon of Physmal Educadon in the grades several years ago. At the present time DhYSical training is a vital part of each pupil's high school education. It is indispensable in a. modern school. It is part of the curriculunr The Art and Design department was inaugurated when the new system started off in 1923. Each year shows the wisdom of establishing this course. Both teacher and pupils are often employed nct only in school enterprizes but frequently those of the community. To meet the needs of a progressive business world, the commercial department offers excellent cources in Arithmetic, Penmanship, Stenography, Typewriting Com- mercial law, bookkeeping, oiiice practice, All lines of commercial activities are taught. Graduates of that department are doing creditable work in nearly all lines of business, When the new building was planned, ample provision was made for instruction in the sciences. The three practical sciences, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are provided for in laboratories as fine as any found in Kansas. Botany, Agriculture, Physical Geography, and Physiology are taught with the ideal of usefulness ever be- fore the instructor. A For all this six years of instruction and training in high school work we acknow- ledge our indebtedness to the clear foresight and willing sacrifices of the citizens of Independence.
