I ' To the Class of Z6' fi From the depths of my he-art, I congratulate you fine boys and girls on this ' realization of one of the laudable ambitions of your young lives. For twelve years, you with your father and mother have cherished the ultimate consummation of this dream. This dream has beeni the lodestar of your vision as well as the impetus that AJ , . has enabled you to surmount many obstacles and triumph over many f1iSaDD0iI1tmeI1tS- 'T E During these years, you have learned the reward of' labor, the necessity of stead- fastness of purpose, the joy of achievement. Your mental and spiritual horizon 3 Q, has broadenedg your habits have crystalized. In some degree at least, you have 2 1 f-ound yourselves,-fashioned a compass and charted your course rather than remain 2 i the prey of the chance winds that blow weaklings hither and thither on life's stormy I seas. ' You have laid the foundation of life's superstructure. What that temple is U0 ' iif become depends with what degree of skill and integrity you have done this prelim- ,g .. inary construction' and the conscious effort and purpose you employ in completng the ' edifice. LQ As yet you are not master workmeng you are still apprentices. The world is n0t I at your feet. A college education will strengthen you greatly for life's battles and xi you should so equip yourself-. But :rhether you continue in school or whether you b enter the field of business, now is the time to take a personal inve-nnofry, Try to analyze yourself, setting forth your weakness as impartially as your strength, Con- .-f f centrate on strengthe-ning the points where you have not done your best. Purge from D ., ylclur ,conceptions every atom, of the idea of getting by. It has no place in any 1 3 sound philosophy of life and will wreck your hopes and bring nothing but failure if and disappointment. Honest endeavor is the inevitable price of permanent success. f' When society was far less complex than today, James Russell Lowell penned: K The busy world shoves angrily aside f f The man who stands with arms akimbo set 57 1 Until occasion tells him what to dog -' And he who waits to have his task marked out h I Shall die and leave his errand unfulfilled. . ' These lines argue the necessity of initiative, of being alert, of seizing opportunity be- , fore a competitor thrusts you aside, the courage to dare. Today with this brave spirit, must go the fitness of cooperative endeavor, the ability of teamwork. Modern QV achievement is not wrought by individuals standing in solitary grandeur, but rather , f' by groups working together, imbued wth common aims and kindred ideals. Organ- ' -1 ization is the motve power behind every large accomplishment. So the school of u I today edeavors to lead -you to crystalize habits of fair play, the submergence of self for the larger good of the group. This does not mean the sacrifice of individuality ' is or the compromise of character. It does not mean that in questions of right and f QR wrong we may merely do as others are doing. Despite the social complexities of 3 the day, the old cardinal virtues still reinailn and we are personally responsible for 5 our moral and religious code, In these big things, these fundamental principles so f fraught with happiness or woe, I would have you stand steadfast, stanch, true and uncompromisng, He who makes terms or gives quarters to wrong, treads on trea- cherous ground. J My confidence, my hopes, my prayers will go with you through the years. May .Q life continue sweet, beautiful and useful. It is one of the largest classes in the history of the school. It is the first class to do all of its senior high school work in the school as reorganized into a senior high school. The superior advantages afforded by a generous public in the form of new and adequate facilities for Science, Physical Educa- tion, Manual Arts, Art and Design, and school assemblys of every character have been enjoyed by this class. An annual by its nature is primarily devoted to the extra curricular life of the school. This life during the course of the class of 1926 has been fraught with much Worthwhile endeavor of varied char- acter and with a large degree of success. This annual records successful achievement with individual credit to a proportionate number of this class in forms of athletics in which high schools participate. Yours have been years of marked expansion in musical work as a school and we have been Well represented in music by a large proportion of the class. In debate and scholastic contests the work of our school has been especially successful. ' The spirit of cooperative endeavor as a class, as a school and as a student body and faculty has been all that can be desired. The latter is a matter of special gratification to those responsible for the supervision and administra- tion of the school and depends to a very large degree upon the spirit and leader ship of the senior class We are not flattering when we say that the class of 1926 is a superior class It has been a pleasure to associate with this splendid class as a whole and with all of its officers for whom we have the klndest per sonal regards The memory of the class of 1926 will always be a choice mem ory with the faculty and the writer As you leave us we are sure you will not forget the high school and that when opportunity affords you as citizens will champion its interests 1n the ser tice of other high school generatlons The faculty is interested in the personal and community achievements of this class It could not be otherwise because if We as teachers are successful it must be through you and your larger service to your day' and generation be cause of contact with us We extend to you best wishes for all of the good things of life and extend our wishes in all confidence of a very large measure of success Sincerely J F Hughes Page 16 ss, f-+ INBEPENBEQCE KKKQK 'J L u '- . 1 . . . . . .
