While our country was celebrating its Bicentennial, Independence High School was celebrating its first year in operation. The first years are by far the most difficult. Unfinished landscapes, class- rooms without blackboards or pencil Sharpeners and teams without uni- forms were not uncommon sights during Independence's first year. Tradi- tions had not been established yet so we were forced to create them. 1976 not only marked lndependence's first year in existence and the United States of America's 200th birth- day but it was also a presidential campaign year. In Montreal the 1976 Olympics were making history with such superstars as Nadie Comaneci and Bruce Jenner, who soon became everyone's All-American boy. The following year was the end of a new beginning. It ended lndependence's first year in operation and began a new school year in September. The first graduating class of Independence had something to boast about with such athletes as Mike Menacho and Al Gallo. Another first in the world came into existence when Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby, was born, Other celebrities such as O. I.
