' ' u . .11 After completing our most successful waterpolo season with a 13-5 overall record and the North Division Champi- onship with a 5-O league record, one can only see that lndependence's wat- erpolo team has developed into a true winner and will continue to do so. This team was an offensive-minded team as some of the scores may indi- cate, but it was the defense that made the offense work. The players played as a complete team, with everyone con- tributing to winning. Our defense was lead by mature seniors, Dave Bunyard as goalie, Mike Brock and Tim Wolford. The offense was lead by all-league player Tim Wolford with 57 goals and Chris Van Slyke with 55 goals. Our offense was a control type offense with a quick control-attack that resulted from a pressing man to man defense! The high point of the season was the 11- 7 victory over Piedmont fthe first victory ever for Independence in 3 years and the fact that the winning traditions at Independence is in full swing. We had four players make the all-league selections this year! They were: lst team all-league, senior, Tim Wolford, 2nd team all-league, goalie Dave Bunyard, and defensive standout Mike Brock, and !illll ...ii-'fs ' - 9- Q -Z , '17 ini -'-gif ' ..,. CROSS COUNTRY F' f' ft r' fr' r' In a year that was supposed to be a rebuilding year, the 76er cross country team has faired extraordinar- ily well. ln team competition, the girl's harrier squad proved to be the best IHS has ever fielded. Once again the girl's claimed the Mt. Hamilton Athletic League North Division title. They then went against Santa Teresa for the North!South Championships, but suffered a 27-29 defeat. This was the only blemish in their MHAL supremacy. l-lovvever, they crushed Santa Teresa and all other competition in the league finals by over 30 points. They then went on to capture outstanding 4th and 11th place in the CCS and Region III finals. Irene Bueno was the top performer all season for the girls, but Sue Bunnell and Maureen Barraras added strong support. Considering where the varsity team was this time last year 45th place in MHALJ they have proven that they will not stand still for anyone. This year as var- sity runners the 76er men's team placed 2nd in the MHAL, 2nd in the league finals, and a very respect- able 9th in the Region Ill finals. Probably the biggest reason for the varsity team's success was due to their ifl runner jesse Torres. jesse vvent undefeated in league competition, won the Chrystal Springslnvitational, won the league finals, placed 5th in the region meet, and then finsi- hed 3rd in the CCS finals, ahead of all other juniors. The froshfsoph team was led by Alex luarez and Bob Patterson. Although young and inexperienced, the team still managed to place 2nd in the North Division, 3rd in the league finals, and 13th in the region meet despite the absence of top runner Alex luarez, vvho was running in the varsity race. Next year the 76ers look to be even stronger,as they will only be losing 5 seniors from this year's team. Congratulations to all of you for your success and your dedication. With God's Blessing Coach Sommer 186 CrossCountry -ki'-A'-k
