XIARSITY FCDOTBALL The 1979 football season was a very successful and gratifying one for the varsity sixers. After losing the opening game to Salinas, who turned out to be one of the finest football teams in northern California, and after having a record of three losses in its first five games, the team steadily improved to finally win the North Division of the M.H.A.L. Highlights of the winning season were an explosive first half lead over Piedmont Hills Q31-Oi, the following win over Milpitas Q14-121 which many Predictors thought couldn't hap- pen and then the final regular season cap of a win over Ayer which gave Independence the North Division title. The season ended with a tough M.H.A.L. play- off loss to Oak Clrove who was ranked the best team in the Central Coast Section all season long. Instrumental in the winning season were start- ing seniors, Ernie Arranaga, Brad Chagnin, Der- rick Edwards, Kevin Gant, Don lorden, Rob Moreland fkickerl, Roddy Neri, Mike O'Con- ner, .Charlie Phillips, Rich Ross, Evo Silva and Tony Webb. Returning next year are starters Eric Adams, Corey Anderson, Cornell Brown, Kyle Garcia, Mike Peller, Keith Poe, Terry Thomas, and Doug Wagoner. The graduating seniors will be missed, but somewhere underclassmen will emerge to continue the traditional winning football pro- gram. -Coach Cementina 176 Varsitylfootball i ki k

.f Nj' ' +11 ,I 1114383 As head coach of the Var- sity Football team I am pleased with the progress of the total program. Both teams won the North Divi- sion of the MHAL, and I want to congratulate and thank the coaching staff who made this possible. l'm especially proud of the varsity players. They are a dedicated group of fine men of whom I believe IHS should be proud. They demonstrated that they are fine football players and gentlemen on and off the field. Many of them are honor students. While I am pleased I am not sat- isfied. We have more to accomplish, and I would like to take this opportu- nity to invite every student to join us. There is a place for you in our program. -Coach Cementina INDEPENDENCE HICIH SCHOOL 1979 VARSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE RECORDS I Q I ...fl Dil-4 'a IHS 15 Salinas 33 IHS 28 Irvington 0 IHS 15 Andrew Hill 21 IHS 27 Santa Teresa 6 IHS 21 james Lick 281' IHS 36 Overfelt O' IHS 38 Piedmont 6 ' IHS 14 Milpitas 12 ' IHS Q Ayer -Qjj IHS 228 Opponents 106 IHS 7 Oak Grove 28 Season 6-3-0 League 4-1-0 League games represented by Y GREAT SEASON SIXERSIII l 'sf The 76ers were a young fEf:Q - -wa. determined group of playerskf ,1.,4 -C '11 Our season started off slowly -'l tg, I with an opening loss to Sali- ' I t ',, ., nas.
