One of these men was Guy Klitgaard who at the time was the principal of Silver Creek High School. His talent and experience led to the many innovations made in Educational Park. There is no doubt about Mr. Klitgaard's vast experience in education. His career began twenty years ago as a social studies teacher at Andrew Hill H.S. He was promoted to chairman of the social studies department at Overfelt H.S. and was then made social studies Subject Area Coor- dinator. His last years at Overfelt H.S. were spent as an A.P.E.D. after which he was transferred and promoted to the principal of Silver Creek H.S. He spent two dedicated years as the Assistant for the Educational Park Planning Committee. His dedication was rewarded as he became the principal of independence High School. Guy Klitgaard is not just a man who sits behind a desk and attends meetings. He enjoys the out- doors and spending time with his family. He is devoted to the staff and students of Independ- ence High School and this devotion is reflected in what we now see at Educational Park - four years of growth and blossoming. Thank you Guy. 14 Dedication i k'k'k F 'k'kir'k Dedication 15 5 -X ,Q .V Dmmll Domi' out S .-X I5 'A k'k'k Seniors 17 Patty Abad Mike Adiarte Theresa Agngaragn SHY Roger Armando Abad Aguilar jevemiel Agustin .1 FQ .ig N .. 5, john Aguilar Theresa Alba Lisa Aguilar Dennis Albrecht Ernie Acosta Aaron Agulay Michele Allen 18 Seniors 'ki k'k Linda . With the class of 1980 we have shown our supporters as well as our doubters that we are here to stay. Our growth as a comprehensive high school is both noteworthy and well noted. You, the staff members of the American, are charged with documenting the year 1979-80 for posterity and recalling for your classmates the magic that made this year memora- big for everyone. Congratulations on a fantastic jo . Mel Goertz Assistant to the Principal 100 Principals 'ki'1lr'k fi? 'ao wg 9 I+ 'BUILDING YEARBOOK MESSAGE: The class of 1980 -that very special class that is the first to spend their entire four years of high school at Independence. When we look at the activities and achievements of this group we are able to begin to measure what the results of our efforts might be at the Educa- tional Park. I am proud of the achievements of the staff and student body in all areas. We are fast becoming one of the top academic shcools in the valley - our main reason for being, and we are also atop school in athletics and activities. I am confident future classes will continue this trend and be inspired by the accomplishments of the class of 1980. Guy Klitgaard Principal , linda Drought Rose Mangino f'?- . X Betsy Merritt gi. Our ultimate goal is to pro- duce creative, independent thinkers, this goal can be accomplished by the faculty placing emphasis on the six R's and the students committing themselves to learn all that they can and to apply what they have learned. I feel happy and comfortable serving as Liberty Manor's principal because of the support and cooperation of our unified staff and student body. Our teachers have similar educational philosophies and make use of numerous teaching methods. Our organized and caring counselors provide excellent guidance services, and we have a very efficient secretarial staff. With this type of staff and a group of great students, what more can one expect? To our seniors, who will be the first true graduating class of independence High School, I say this - keep learning, keep dreaming, keep setting goals, keep working, keep believing in yourself. In other words, never give up and success will be yours. Barbara Z. After losing the opening game to Salinas, who turned out to be one of the finest football teams in northern California, and after having a record of three losses in its first five games, the team steadily improved to finally win the North Division of the M.H.A.L. Highlights of the winning season were an explosive first half lead over Piedmont Hills Q31-Oi, the following win over Milpitas Q14-121 which many Predictors thought couldn't hap- pen and then the final regular season cap of a win over Ayer which gave Independence the North Division title. The season ended with a tough M.H.A.L. play- off loss to Oak Clrove who was ranked the best team in the Central Coast Section all season long. Instrumental in the winning season were start- ing seniors, Ernie Arranaga, Brad Chagnin, Der- rick Edwards, Kevin Gant, Don lorden, Rob Moreland fkickerl, Roddy Neri, Mike O'Con- ner, .Charlie Phillips, Rich Ross, Evo Silva and Tony Webb. Returning next year are starters Eric Adams, Corey Anderson, Cornell Brown, Kyle Garcia, Mike Peller, Keith Poe, Terry Thomas, and Doug Wagoner. North Division Co- Championship highlighted the 1979 Inde- pendence Frosh!Soph Football season. The long grueling hours of hard work paid off as the disciplined sixer attack rolled over opponent after opponent in route to a 7-1-1 record. After dropping a hard fought contest to a tough Salinas junior Varsity Squad, the six- ers were never to taste defeat again. High- lighting their victories were wins over a good junior Varsity team from Cupertino, South Division Co-Champ Santa Teresa, and last year's North Division Champion Milpitas. Leading the sixer offense which averaged over 16 points per game were, Quarter- back Dino Vargas, Fullbacks Todd Seleski, and Kevin Walker, Tailback jim Reyes, and the brother receiving act of jerome and Carl Oliver. Controlling the trenches were Steve Wolford, joe Glenn, joe Nocewon- ger, Ken james, Tim Caruso, and Monte VValler. The sixer Dooms Day Defense was the best in the league in points allowed, giv- ing up an average of less than 7 points a game. Doing the top job up front were Todd Lundberg james, Vance Minnis and Chris Carmona. Plugging holes from their Iinebacking spots were Glenn, Selski. Wolford, and Charlie Boom Boom Sher- rill. Running the airways were defensive backs j. Oliver, Serame, Orosco, and Adams. Most importantly, this year's Frosh!Soph squad possessed a spirit of pride and determination all season long. Once again the girl's claimed the Mt. Hamilton Athletic League North Division title. They then went against Santa Teresa for the North!South Championships, but suffered a 27-29 defeat. This was the only blemish in their MHAL supremacy. l-lovvever, they crushed Santa Teresa and all other competition in the league finals by over 30 points. They then went on to capture outstanding 4th and 11th place in the CCS and Region III finals. Irene Bueno was the top performer all season for the girls, but Sue Bunnell and Maureen Barraras added strong support. Considering where the varsity team was this time last year 45th place in MHALJ they have proven that they will not stand still for anyone. This year as var- sity runners the 76er men's team placed 2nd in the MHAL, 2nd in the league finals, and a very respect- able 9th in the Region Ill finals. Probably the biggest reason for the varsity team's success was due to their ifl runner jesse Torres. jesse vvent undefeated in league competition, won the Chrystal Springslnvitational, won the league finals, placed 5th in the region meet, and then finsi- hed 3rd in the CCS finals, ahead of all other juniors. The froshfsoph team was led by Alex luarez and Bob Patterson. Although young and inexperienced, the team still managed to place 2nd in the North Division, 3rd in the league finals, and 13th in the region meet despite the absence of top runner Alex luarez, vvho was running in the varsity race. The dance concert is a production of jazz, ballet and modern dance pieces. The dances were choreographed by both the students and the director, Debbie Amable. For most of the students this produc- tion was their first, however they felt very comfortable with the audience and them- selves. These are a few of the people to whom we owe special thanks. t was only a mere idea before Mrs. Sanchez and Mrs. Deffen- it life. It is now an annual publication illustrating works talented young artists and writers. We are extremely such dedicated faculty members. Vince Bernucci must mentioned when speaking of Stone Soup. His help in the printing Soup has indeed won him a vote of thanks. Charlie Brown was an enormous success that earned over one thousand dollars for scholarships. The major portion of the production was made pos- sible by Ray Rogoway. He acted as a producer and chief technician. His devotion to his students and his dedication to his work has made Mr. Rogo- way a most admired and popular faculty member. Mrs. Gillespie has been the instructional Team Leader of the English Department since lndependence's beginning in 1976. She has never hesi- tated to help a student with a problem. Her devotion and sincere sense of caring has enhanced her stay at I.H.S. Not often enough do we express our gratitude to the outstanding librarians. Betzi Akerstrom is one librarian to whom we owe a special thank you. She is never hesitant to help a student with an important project or an entire class with their term papers. Many teachers depend on her to select books and research materials. Without warm and helpful librarians like Betzi, the library would be just another room filled with books. The first years are by far the most difficult. Unfinished landscapes, class- rooms without blackboards or pencil Sharpeners and teams without uni- forms were not uncommon sights during Independence's first year. Tradi- tions had not been established yet so we were forced to create them. The faculty and the student body alike were eager to predict an auspi- cious beginning for the experimental school. , f .ll XX ' kwa-VIA5 ,tlluilmlllo W . In Montreal the 1976 Olympics were making history with such superstars as Nadie Comaneci and Bruce Jenner, who soon became everyone's All-American boy. The following year was the end of a new beginning. It ended lndependence's first year in operation and began a new school year in September. The first graduating class of Independence had something to boast about with such athletes as Mike Menacho and Al Gallo. Another first in the world came into existence when Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby, was born, Other celebrities such as O. I. Simpson, Donna Summer, and the glamorous trio of CharIie's Angels skyrocked to fame. F7 P ,ii 1 1 ii 5, ' ' l r , J W fbi l' 'xl' , f - rx TNKQQXWJ i XW K Wiikx! Chris Lundy, Pam Landrum, Tony Harris and U'rainnah Broussard each left hisfher perspective sport to graduate and enable some other aspiring talent to take his place. Shawn Petera and David Chew demonstrated their abilities academically and won awards and schol arships to further inspire their educational goals. ' While Independence had its own successes and failures so did the rest of the country. Inflation continued to take a tremendous bite out of everyone's salary. Skylab began its final descent in july of 1979 while the world waited and worried for the outcome of its perilous fall. Nuclear power was increasingly becoming the subject of many debates, especially after the near-disaster at the Three Mile Island plant in March of 1979. l 1 Q Qtrl 1 vvxeel io islpvgrfh wmv Mlws Avo vagal- OA 960.0165 KIXOXJS .
