Soph team contin- ued the fine tradition of outstand- ing wrestling at Independence. With a team consisting mostly of freshmen the young 76'ers er- formed extremely well in d,ual meets and tournaments. In dual meet competition most of the 76'ers as they soundly defeated them. Overfelt played the roll of the spoiler this ear as the nar- rowly defeated tbhe 76'ers 33-26 to take Frosh! Soph league honors. Proving that one loss does not make a season the youn 76'ers per- formed well at the american J .V. Tournament where they took a second place, missing first by 10 ts., against teams consisting of Sophomores and Juniors. The also took second place at the Silver Creek Tournament where 32 schools competed. Wrestlers who were especially impressive this year were Robert Gonzales - Second at the Ameri- can and Third at the Y.B. Tourna- ment , Nelson Asistin - Cham- pion at the Santa Teresa, second at the Y.B. Tournament and third at the American Tournament , Felix Velasquez - Second at the Santa Teresa and American Tournaments and third at the Silver Creek Tour- nament , and Tony Bier - Cham- gon at the Silver Creek and Yerba uena Tournaments. WARSHTY WRESTLHNG We here at Independence feel that we have continued our fine winning tradition in wrestling. The 1978-79 Wrestling Team had a very exciting and dynamic season beginning with a first place win in the San Francisco Tournament. With six seniors, five juniors and one sophomore we have compiled the 46 following season: IHS. . Ayer IHS. 57 Piedmont Hills IHS. 47 Gunn IHS. 63 James Lick IHS. 49 Milpitas IHS. 32 Overfelt San Francisco lst place Mission San Jose 2nd place Gonzales 2nd place fmissed lst place by 4 pts.J Clovis C2 daysl 6th place MHAL 3rd place Some of the outstanding champions were: Senior Bruce King - lst place San Fran- cisco Sz Gonzales Tournament. Senior Dario Slavazza - 1st place San Francisco, Mission San Jose and Gonzales Tournament. Senior Levine Vesico - lst place San Francisco Tournament. Junior Mike Gauvin - lst place San Fran- cisco, Gonzales and MHAL Tournament. and Sophomore Ricky Palomino with a superior season being voted most outstanding wres- tler at the Gonzales Tournament by all the coaches. Rickey placed lst in Mission San Jose and MHAL Tournament. As with any successful team we too are still looking forward to someday soon win- ning a state championship. The teams leading rebounders included senior Phil Stone, junior Derrick Edwards, and sophomore Marcell Blue. The ball handling duties were executed expertl by senior John Torres, junior Gerald llshimaru, and junior Phil Gil- lespie. g This was a building ear for the team.
