The 170 members of the band are led on the field by Drum Major Ron Vitug fopposite left bottomjp and Majorette Jane Filice Cupper right hand cornerj. The 1977-78 season has been marked by improvement in all areas of competi- tion. The high point of this year has to be the band's invitation and participation in the 1978 Tournament of the Roses Parade in Pasadena, which is an honor almost unheard of for a second year band. Jef- ferson became one of the best educated Americans of his time. At the age of 17 he entered the College of William and Mary, where he got exciting first glimpses of The expansion of science, and of the system of the things in which we are placed. Jefferson became our third president of the United States on Nlarch 4, 1801, in the new national capital Washington, D.C. His inaugural address - a political touchstone for a century or longer - bril- liantly summed up the Republican creed and appealed for the resto- ration of harmony and affection. This important project was sponsored by the Villa M Student Advisory Coun- cil and represented many hours of study and hard work. Our Villa dedication committee developed three C35 priorities for our name: C11 That the name will honor the local history and culture of East San Jose, C23 That the name will reflect our feeling of Villa Unity and purpose and C35 That our Villa will receive recognition and support from the San Jose Bicentennial Commission. By honor- ing EI Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe we feel we have accomplished our goals. We are proud that the Pueblo represented the first civilian settlement in California, that it became our first state capitol and developed into an early edu- cational leader in the state of California. Bennington Hall is the villa named after a major battle of the Revolutionary War. The beautiful Hennington flag is our symbol. Our student body is working toward academic excellence. Our staff of teachers really care and have put the stu- dent's progress toward that excellence as their number one priority. Our Parent-Teacher-Student Association is giving their time and support to earn scholarship money, to keep parents informed and in general, to give all-around support to the goals and programs we have. We all hope that Bennington Hall will be worthy of the traditions that our patriots fought for so long ago. When our first senior class receives its diplomas at the graduation ceremonies, I hope they are proud of their accomplishments, and glad they have been a part of Independence High School. This year the intramural program has been greatly increased in the activities offered. The lunch time program and the special intramural single lunch schedule has brought out more students and faculty to participate, from serious boxing to pie eating contests. Special credit goes to the group of students who served as officials and coordinators of some 30 or more events and activities. The villa intramural trophy is at stake now and Jefferson Hall being last year's first year winner will have to struggle to maintain their title. in A . .. -. R. Salinas - B.H. McClintock - B.H. The Sixers finished the sea- son strong as they won 3 of their last five games, including the thrilling 43-42 win over the M.H.A.L. Northern League Cham- pion representative Overfelt. Even though the 7-14 season record was not impressive the Sixers stayed with it and defeated some of the strong teams in the C.C.S. Leading the way for this year's Varsity Team was Senior, Mike Menacho, first in scoring with 99 pts. in league play, and first in assists with 30 in league play. Also contributing to the scoring and the rebounding were Junior, Phil Stone, Senior Kereshawn Hardy and Senior, Albert Gallo. Other valuable players were Senior, Chris Yamashita, Junior Joe Burt and Ron Taylor. One of the best played games this year was against defending league champs Santa Theresa.
