varsity soccer The I976-77 Independence Varsity Soccer Team had a very successful season. The 76ers started the season with four SHUT-OUTS. Joe Falcas scored our first goal of the season against Bellar- mine and went on to lead the team in total goals scored with l9l goals. In a close second was Sam McHenry with i8l goals. Our forwards were superbly assisted by the fine play-making skills of our halfbacks Keith Marin, Cele Moctezuma, Marc Serna, and Dean Marvin. Our defense was anchored by goalie Domenic Rancadore who allowed less than one goal per game along with excellent defensive skills at the fullbacks Craig Choate, Mike Lovelace and Ray Salinas. We completed the season by placing third in the M.H.A.L. with the record of 9-3. Special thanks to assistant Coaches Rafael Renteria and Ron Sanchez for their effort and time, and scorekeeper Cheryl Rob- can and manager Evo Silva. i rd Front Row, L-R: D. Rancadore, K. Cousman. Sanchez, J. frosh soph wrestlin m.h.a.l. champs The froshfsoph wrestling team ended a great season for the first year of Independence High School exist- ence. Under the leadership of coach T. Mestaz they won the Northern and Southern Division Champion- ships. The team continued on by clinching the M.H.A.L. finals. Our tuffestleague match was against W. C. Overfelt which was squeezed by with a score of 29!27 to win the Southern Division Title. The outstanding wrestler of that match was freshman Charlie Phillips. For the Northern Division Title, Andrew Hill gave the l.H.S. wrestlers a tough time. The 76'ers pulled ahead 27!23 with sophomore Bruce King as the out- standing wrestler. When asked Coach Mestaz to what he attributed his success he said, I developed a sound philosophy from two great men who I was lucky to have as my previous Coaches, Lyn Dyche of Oak Grove High School and Alan Abraham of San Francisco State University.
