HISTORY or EXCELLENCE NDEPENDENCE -Q The mere word evokes thoughts of freedom, integrity and individuality. To us, the crew of this warship, INDEPENDENCE has been home, protec- tor, maintainer, and above all - the symbol of power and liberty which makes our nation the most powerful and respected in the world. I But the INDEPENDENCE story does not begin on this deployment. Her service and that of her predecessors are as much a part of the nation's fabric as the ideals of her name. I The first INDEPENDENCE was a 10-gun continental sloop under the command of Captain Iohn Young. The second INDEPENDENCE was launched in 1814, and in addition to serving during the Mexican-American War, this 74-gun frigate was the flag ship for Commodore Bainbridge's Mediterranean Squadron. In 1912, another INDEPEN- DENCE was commissioned and operated as part of the Naval Dverseas Transportation Service. The first INDEPENDENCE, a 10-gun continental sloop, began her service on the year of our nations birth, 1776. One of her first riders, Iohn Paul jones, received the second salute rendered t the newly founded American flag. 4 'Si-:-557 Q
