She is the first ship to ever bear this name, and is one of a series of 7 helicopter carriers built by lngall's Shipbuilding of Pascagoula, Mississippi. The Keel was laid on April 1968 and the ship was launched on 24 May 1969. She was commissioned in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on 20 June 1970 under the sponsorship of Mrs. Jack Brooks. The ship is specially designed to conduct amphibious force landings by providing helicopter support to transport troops and assist in establishing air superiority in the designated landing area. Helicopter detachments that embark onboard INCHON include the CH-53E Super Stallions, CH-46 Sea Knights, UH-1 Hueys and AH-1 Cobras. Additionally, a U.S. Marine Corp Battalion Landing Team QBLTD consisting of 2,000 troops and their equipment, embarks for lNCHON's deployments. lNCHON's other weapons systems include two Vulcan Phalanx, Close-In Weapons Support Systems, providing close in anti-air defense capabilities. MARG 1-94 marks the last time USS INCHON will be tasked to conduct amphibious operations. This fall, INCHON will undergo a conversion to a Mine counter-Measure Support Ship. The ship is powered by a modern, clean burning 600 psi steam system which developes 23,000 shaft horsepower and can propel the ship at speeds up to 22 knots. Virtually all compartments are air conditioned and the ship's store, laundry and barbershop represent vast improvements over older counterparts. Berthing spaces are outfitted with bunk-locker combinations and reading lamps. In 1990, USS INCHON played a key role in OPERATION SHARP EDGE, performing evacuation operations during Libya's civil war. Shortly afterwards, INCHON patrolled the southern Mediterranean in preparation for emergency evacuations in support of OPERATION DESERT SHIELDIDESERT STORM. INCHON has previously deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic performing various amphibious operations and exercises. ln 1972, INCHON sailed on a world cruise from Norfolk, Virginia to the Caribbean Sea, South Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, through the Panama Canal, returning to the Caribbean and finally to the North Atlantic. The ship has received the following awards: Meritorious Unit Commendation, Humanitarian Service Medal, two National Defense Medals, Battle E , Marine corps Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation, Sea Service Deployment and Arctic Service. USS INCHON is homeported in Norfolk, Virginia and is part of Amphibious Group 2. i I
