SEPTEMBER 11 1972 BERGEN NGRWAY Situated on the southwestern coast of Norway is the port city of Bergen. At one time the principal city of Norway, this beautiful city has evolved into the second largest city and port of this nation. The town's ancient name of Bjorgvin means Pasture Among the Mountains. Because it has always been closed off from the rest of the country, its in- habitants, since the time of the Vikings, have turned to the sea for their livelihood.

l Probably already old when King Olav designated it a town in the year 1070, Bergen was centered around his castle of Alrekstad. lt was the most important and prosperous town in medieval Norway and famed for its 32 churches and monasteries. Frequently the royal residence, it was the scene of the cor- onation of some of Norway's greatest kings. The Norwegian is perhaps first and foremost an individualistg partially due to his environ- ment and possibly also due to the influence of the sea. The people of Bergen were typical Norwegians.
