Y , ---..-.4-A , -- SEPTEMBER 11 1972 BERGEN NGRWAY Situated on the southwestern coast of Norway is the port city of Bergen. At one time the principal city of Norway, this beautiful city has evolved into the second largest city and port of this nation. The town's ancient name of Bjorgvin means Pasture Among the Mountains. Because it has always been closed off from the rest of the country, its in- habitants, since the time of the Vikings, have turned to the sea for their livelihood. l Probably already old when King Olav designated it a town in the year 1070, Bergen was centered around his castle of Alrekstad. lt was the most important and prosperous town in medieval Norway and famed for its 32 churches and monasteries. Frequently the royal residence, it was the scene of the cor- onation of some of Norway's greatest kings. The Norwegian is perhaps first and foremost an individualistg partially due to his environ- ment and possibly also due to the influence of the sea. The people of Bergen were typical Norwegians. They were friendly, courteous, and proud of their heritage. Maintenance of the military balance is considered to be one of the conditions necessary for reaching satisfactory solutions to East-West issues. Exercise STRONG EXPRESS was designed to provide evidence that NATO Allies are determined to proceed along the road to peace while maintaining adequate strength. il Although the exercise was held during the last two weeks of September, INCHON was anchored off Andoya Island, Norway, early in the month. We used the extra time to make required preparations and offload advance elements. ...-l '-2135 5 F SFT-V V ,L-.,.-, f..q-... , W -1-2. 'K is Q1 . H GERMANY CCTOBER 5, 1972 El The final stop for INCI-ION was the small industrial port city of Wllhelmshaven on the Northern coast of Germany. Though small ln size, Wllhelmshaven afforded the members ot the crew a chance to do some shopping and to sample the local bears. Because ofthe availability ot rail transporta- tion to some of the larger cities nearby, notably Hamburg, many crew members took ad- vantage of this port of call to go inland. OCTGBER 20, 1972 Back at Norfolk again, we began hearing a rumor which was far- fetched enough to be true. Men who had just been reunited with their families hoped it wouIdn't happen, but it was soon confirmed. We would deploy to the Western Pacific on November 9, 1972. l l Rapid preparations began at once. Two of our 3 !5O caliber gun-mounts were remov- ed and the installation of the Basic Point Defense Surface Missile System began. i 4' ie ,: X V xi ff 15 The morning of November 9, 1972, Captain F T.
