THEN AND NSW: From mothers, aunts, and grandmothers, Incarnate Word has become a long honored custom for many students. These students find their success in school to be very important as it carries on the spirit of the fami- ly. Debbie Rodriguez remarks, I have high regards for I.W. because my mom and aunt speak highly of the courses, people, extracurricular activities, and overall environment of the school. I'm glad to be continuing the family tradition. Maria Vazquez has found that several changes have been made since her school days. She recalls, Things were less complicated than they are now. Classes were structured and there were fewer students atten- ding high school on the college campus. The year after Ms. Vazquez graduated the high school moved to its present location. Her uniform, purchased at Ioskes, consisted of a tie, a beanie, a long sleeved white blouse, the traditional green skirt, a winter skirt of wool, and brown a white saddle oxfords. In 1949, Ms. Vazquez's seni year, students were allowed to wear short sleev blouses for the first time. Fashion demanded the skir length be seven to twelve inches from the floor. Rules were also quite different. Ms. Vazqu remembers a time when there was silence in t hallway as she kept to the right while moving on her next class. Each class began with a prayer and t sound of a buzzer ended the period. Small earrin were permitted but make-up was forbidden. Although a prom wasn't given, a wide assortment extracurricular activities were available. At Christm time, students helped Red Cross as a schoolwide se vice project. An operetta was another major project. Everyone the school participated. Those who weren't chosen f a role helped by singing in the chorus. . -,rf in iZ4K'
