The Road to Research Is Pave The newest and most innovative idea added to our curriculum in ac- cordance with our tradition of ex- cellence takes the form of a course entitled Introduction to Research. The brainchild of Mrs. Carol Brown, this experimental project became a reality due to a 510,000 grant from the GIFT program spon- sored by General Telephone Elec- tric fG.T.E.j, which was matched with 55,000 put up by our school. GIFT, Grant Initiatives For Teachers, thought the multidiscipline course designed to research the effects of last year's sulfuric acid spill on the fauna and flora of Medina River was a novel idea, and work on a funding pro- posal began. The research class is taught by three teachers, for research fits not only into one scholastic category, but stretches across the curriculum, from natural science and chemistry taught by Mrs. Brown to mathematical statistics and pro- bability with Mrs. Barbara Stem, and yet again to the English skills of technical writing and speaking taught by Mrs. Ellen Shull. A new course means new equip- ment, which includes teachers specialized to teach this type of class. Therefore, the initial amount of the grant went into the enrich- ment of the teachers. Mrs. Stem took Statistics and Math at Stan- ford University last summer while Mrs. Brown embarked on her own research at Trinity. Mrs. Brown A As Bridget Brandes, Paula Muller, and Debbie Alaniz prepare for class, Mrs. Shull and Mrs. Brown leam along with the students, P The research class studies maps. plans on continuing her research at Water Quality Labs in Athens, Georgia. Then, according to the grant, a certain amount had to be budgeted for the buying of expen- dable items, such as field trips, chemicals, and glass items, while the rest was to be used to purchase equipment. This included the MacIntosh computer, the Spectron 20, and software. Still other items were donated, such as the Gas Chromatograph lent to the students by Trinity University, an the Strip Chart Recondensifi from Southwest Research. Th' class was designed to show the i portance of the integration of su jects in research and to stress that ' could not be placed in any singula category. With this background, ' is hoped that students go on to big ger and better things. Who know maybe someday one of them ca discover the cure for cancer, o even the common cold.
