The brainchild of Mrs. Carol Brown, this experimental project became a reality due to a 510,000 grant from the GIFT program spon- sored by General Telephone Elec- tric fG.T.E.j, which was matched with 55,000 put up by our school. GIFT, Grant Initiatives For Teachers, thought the multidiscipline course designed to research the effects of last year's sulfuric acid spill on the fauna and flora of Medina River was a novel idea, and work on a funding pro- posal began. The research class is taught by three teachers, for research fits not only into one scholastic category, but stretches across the curriculum, from natural science and chemistry taught by Mrs. Brown to mathematical statistics and pro- bability with Mrs. Barbara Stem, and yet again to the English skills of technical writing and speaking taught by Mrs. Ellen Shull. A new course means new equip- ment, which includes teachers specialized to teach this type of class. Therefore, the initial amount of the grant went into the enrich- ment of the teachers. Mrs. Stem took Statistics and Math at Stan- ford University last summer while Mrs. Brown embarked on her own research at Trinity. Mrs. Brown A As Bridget Brandes, Paula Muller, and Debbie Alaniz prepare for class, Mrs. Shull and Mrs. Brown leam along with the students, P The research class studies maps. plans on continuing her research at Water Quality Labs in Athens, Georgia. Then, according to the grant, a certain amount had to be budgeted for the buying of expen- dable items, such as field trips, chemicals, and glass items, while the rest was to be used to purchase equipment. This included the MacIntosh computer, the Spectron 20, and software. Still other items were donated, such as the Gas Chromatograph lent to the students by Trinity University, an the Strip Chart Recondensifi from Southwest Research. Th' class was designed to show the i portance of the integration of su jects in research and to stress that ' could not be placed in any singula category. With this background, ' is hoped that students go on to big ger and better things. Who know maybe someday one of them ca discover the cure for cancer, o even the common cold. th Good Investment V Sheila Cordova gets acquainted with Wlldllfe at the YO Ranch 4 Mrs Stem and the research class are gulded down a rocky P ath Neg E R X h 1 we r ,,.. , SS eww 'SSA L ' si 'zza ,r,.:,.,, .. .:2,rs,:, -was tk' X L Wm Nm eeee Yer -i 'Pwww 'PWD ,lg -.A?-N' x .W :W . mf wfiff-A , .e .. f,,w -, fa X? , ,, 5 11N .X 5, H, ,. A There's no place like home and school, even if they're in the opposite directions for some students. 0 I -, . lf' , Ji, THEN AND NSW: From mothers, aunts, and grandmothers, Incarnate Word has become a long honored custom for many students. These students find their success in school to be very important as it carries on the spirit of the fami- ly. Debbie Rodriguez remarks, I have high regards for I.W. because my mom and aunt speak highly of the courses, people, extracurricular activities, and overall environment of the school. I'm glad to be continuing the family tradition. Maria Vazquez has found that several changes have been made since her school days. She recalls, Things were less complicated than they are now. Classes were structured and there were fewer students atten- ding high school on the college campus. The year after Ms. Vazquez graduated the high school moved to its present location. Her uniform, purchased at Ioskes, consisted of a tie, a beanie, a long sleeved white blouse, the traditional green skirt, a winter skirt of wool, and brown a white saddle oxfords. In 1949, Ms. Vazquez's seni year, students were allowed to wear short sleev blouses for the first time. Fashion demanded the skir length be seven to twelve inches from the floor. Rules were also quite different. Ms. Vazqu remembers a time when there was silence in t hallway as she kept to the right while moving on her next class. Each class began with a prayer and t sound of a buzzer ended the period. Small earrin were permitted but make-up was forbidden. Although a prom wasn't given, a wide assortment extracurricular activities were available. At Christm time, students helped Red Cross as a schoolwide se vice project. An operetta was another major project. Everyone the school participated. Those who weren't chosen f a role helped by singing in the chorus. . -,rf in iZ4K' 5 Dx Ms. Vazquez, now Spanish and French eacher, was Queen of fear. They Have Printe1 s Ink in Their Veins Perhaps the hardest working students within the school itself are those dedicated individuals who make up the publications' staffs. What other school organization has its members sacrifice their open mods, weekends, senior sign-out, and possibly risk getting several ulcers for little or no tangible credit? What is it that inspires such dedication? It is true that the benefits are limited in real evidence, but myriad in terms of skill and experience. Knowledge of one's contribution in the produc- tion of a publication that many people will pick up and read, either now or in ten years, remains one of the most satisfying incentives for the people who staff the newspaper, the literary magazine, and the yearbook. In order to keep up with the changing of the times, these people intoxicated by printer's ink adapt themselves to many situations to smooth the process of understan- ding for others. The Literary Magazine improved the collecting of literary submis- sions by placing boxes in every ad- visory. Consciousness was raised in another way by bake sales, reciprocation coming in the form of Ode to Chocolate Cake, a poem by Elena Cabral. The newspaper wrote profiles c some students and continued tl opinion polls carried on in at visories. Readers were never su: of the results until the next issue 1 The Star. The fashion layouts wei especially enjoyed. The yearbook tried once again 1 get every person in a candid pictui at least once during her high schot years. San Antonians are exposed to so many cultures, one cannot overlook the fact that San Antonio is the melting pot of Texas. Two years ago, the French and Spanish clubs merged to form one of the largest clubs, the Foreign Cultures Club. With Ms. Maria Vazquez as the moderator, the club has celebrated and participated in many city-wide festivities that recognize the influence of culture. From the Iazz Festival to a Polo game and through Fiesta Week ac- tivities, Foreign Culture Club members were there. Spanish readings and roses were symbolic highlights of the mass sponsored by the club. The American Way After being detained and released by the Argentinian government without any given explanation, Ms. Marta Kejner left her home country to search for a better life. By the end of August of 1977, Ms. Kejner had made her way to the United States. By law, in order to earn U.S. citizenship the immigrant must either marry an American citizen and earn residency status over a three year period or, without marriage, the immigrant must wait five years. Five years was a long wait for Ms. Kejner but she tried to be patient. In April, she took the required exam that covered her understanding of U.S. politics, history and literacy. Over 200 people gathered in front of the Alamo on july 3, 1986. Pledges were proudly recited and new American citizens were sworn. Certificates and pins of the American flag were flamboyantly flaunted. Back home, over sixty close friends were preparing to celebrate Ms. Kejner's new citizenship. A few of the guests were Mr. Terrence Flannery, Mr. and Mrs. Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Shull. Guests were high on patriotism in red, white and blue outfits. As the ceremony came to a close she couldn't help being glad for herself and surprised for the unexpected shower of gifts. The end of the day marked the beginning of her new life as an official American. K l h'hf' ' MQHMMSQ ' Ms. Kejner We Salute You! ' Children Plea for Peace War is so glorified in this coun- try was the unrecognized fact that Kelly Butcher of San Diego pointed out to audiences across the coun- try. For the children of war-tom countries, gunfire and death are as common to them as a child's joy and laughter at play. On November 21, students pack- ed into the Assembly Hall to hear these Children of War retell their experiences of horror, pain and anger. Each had a story to tell which left us in disbelief and shock. Although Ketso Mabusela was physically present, he was mental- ly reliving a November 21 of the past in South Africa. As he and others marched to protest about high rents, police shot into the unarmed crowds of black citizens, wounding and killing many. Ketso recalled the race of trying to reach and carry the dead to the nearest house before the police carried off the bodies themselves. He describ- ed how he ran out of his bedroom with his leg ablaze when a petrol bomb crashed through his win- dow in the middle of the night. A gnat buzzed around Aviyam Fisher's head while talking and he suddenly slapped at it in the mid- dle of his speech. This quick and unexpected move was what he call- ed a practice of being aggressive. Being eighteen years old, his thoughts were aimed towards join- ing the army of Israel. In his own way he had already become a M. Finger listen. soldier, a soldier fighting for world peace. In another case, Ruben Mejia and his mother hid terrified under the bed as soldiers shot their door open. When the soldiers found them, Ruben and his mother sat in their living room looking into the barrels of machine guns. Outside, they heard death in every gunshot. They somehow were set free. In desperation, his mother sent him to the U.S. for safety and did not see him for two years. Peace is the sweetest thing that Ruben has ex- perienced in his new life in Maryland. - ..... Ketso continued her story briefing us on those that were left behind in order for her to Survive. These Children of War have not even lived half of a lifetime, yet they have witnessed things some people never see. Ruben and Yasmin live in the US., the others must return. They and many others on the tour face serious punish- ment from authorities. Sarah Childs of Houston, Texas, and Kelly Butcher from California acted as U.S. components, pro- moting our participation for their freedom and peace. You can help because you live in a democratic society where you can speak out. Don't take advantage of that, do something -Sarah Childs. Through the work of Mr. Iames I-laster and Denise Hartnett, the tour proved to be a heartwarming success. The follow up group P.A.W. QPeople Against Warj was formed immediately. Although they are back home now, they are still present in the memories of many who have begun the crusade for world peace. A4 Ketso and M. Amador embrace. 4 Students listen to war stories. Although only two credits of a foreign language are required for graduation, students continue to aim higher. Most students start the climb up the ladder by learning basic skills such as reading, listen- ing, speaking and writing. Only a select few dare to climb to the top to an Advanced Placement pro- gram for college credit. Sr. Marietta Hardimann works to progress the first year Spanish stu- dent into second year Spanish with Ms. Marta Kejner. Ms. Kejner offers P Sr. Agnes Rose Piwonka working in the Language Lab. A jennifer Smith does a dic- tation lesson in the Language Lab. Spanish honors courses and the fourth year course of Spanish A.P. which is equivalent to first and se- cond year college Spanish. Two foreign languages are con- nected by talented trilingual, Ms. Maria Vasquez. As well as teaching Spanish I and II, French comes as easily as English. This year's Latin students are fortunate to have Dr. Tarcisio Beal from Incarnate Word College. Latin is the base for the romance languages. Dr. Beal's classes reach further than basic skills. Philosophy, law, medicine, and science have a direct influence in the study of the Latin language. One person that is often overlooked is Sr. Rose Piwonka and the language lab which pro- vides tapes to aid students to speak fluent French and Spanish. Sr. Rose has always sat quietly at the switchboard, monitoring and help- ing students with the mechanical part of learning a foreign language. Offering more than just language study, the study to gain an understanding of history, and culture helps the student to ad- vance to new corridors of learning. 4 Lupita Castrejon and Michelle Delgado conjugate verbs while Sr. Marietta looks on. They often create our future interior designers, fashion coordinators, gourmet chefs and wonderful housewives. Voyages Through Time ww W I Within the departments of English, Fine Arts, and Speech every student becomes something of a time traveler. In English, students read about different eras and cultures throughout their four years. ln the Fine Arts and Drama classes students have the opportunity to perform plays by Shakespeare, poems by Emily Dickinson and speeches by Martin Luther King. Students in speech class prepare for the future by perfecting speak- ing techniques. There have been many winning writers this year. Iuniors saw the production of Homer's Odyssey at the Carver Cultural Community Center as well as creating a Confluence of Writers for their English project. The freshmen and sophomores followed tradition. Sophomores had their Poetry Workshop and the freshmen saw and participated in the Holocaust Workshop. The Fine Arts and Drama depart- ment students have performed in one-act plays, some of them writ- ten and directed by themselves. Others have participated in various citywide drama contests. Among the many events of the year were essay and poster contests that the students participated in. These contests were sponsored by such organiza- tions as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sons of the Republic of Texas, and Fort Sam Houston. They gave the participants fun as well as a challenge. Students also went with Close-up on visit to our nation's capitol Qsee page 455. But not all special projects took place outside of the classroom. Oral reports and dramatic skits were presented. Special reports were helpful in causing the students to learn about and then present more specific aspects of history. The use of visual aids and video cassettes helped people to see and hear history. Some students in American history interviewed men and women about their real-life ex- periences during the depression. They got an inside look at the emo- tional effects events of the past had on the people living through them by doing these personal interviews. History, too wide a subject to be packed into one class, is divided in- to main categories. United States history looks into the record of our nation's past. World history is a category that covers a broader range of history. That of many nations. Government students dissected the American government to see how it worked and was pieced together. They also studied the way it evolved. Somewhere in there the student was to find her place in government and respon- V Diana Kruger presents an oral report The Great Gatsby. Sociology students observed peo- ple in malls, with peers, among family members, and even in the hallways of school. They were also broken up into groups to study group interaction and then report on it. Yes, history students learned many very important things in and out of the classroom. One was that history is not only a class of the past, it is also a lesson for the future. . ., -- . ,, -, W SOCIAL SCIENCE COURSES OFFERED' World History - World Geography Sociology Psychology . , Applied Economics Advanced Social Problems American Government American History ' United Statos Hisiory 5 ' A Cl semy Adventure With did? 1350 exterior Mr Mxfxgrwm Nw:-ies Qanm, Sonya Qorfezy S to a!3aQHerma,JeQny Guerrero, Igms Heard, Mara Mendez, Alma Morales, Ywofmeo nerailt 933131025 Qwoezigym ebra fTeraFkf Ei'anQe,s Tzevmo, ang: I4sa.QV1IQarwV5o1ri6d CI el up una tnpio WHSEHKOH NC 9 fi'2x' ' 4 liii io Also Sthe Q vers Review for whale enwsh women mth our 'Eleacasw Clemgrepagzegx ,and Sengxogs Fax erfgeriaufment meg took 3:1513 ef shadow and werrtfohpi aoofllmoer theraliref Mwhai gxgctly 15 Close-up? Some students would rather stay up-to-date in loose, baggy shirts with jeans and shorts. Gthers are pleased by the ever-so-popular straight skirt accented with a color- ful sash at the hips. What's the word on denim? Yes, it's back again and catching lots of looks. Long hair has also returned with a variety of ways to wear it-long smooth curls, wild with waves, or just naturally straight. As usual, there are those trends that disappear and get pushed to the back of the closet each year. Plaid and paisley have basically had it for now, while solids and pattems have moved up front. It is a tradition I was excited to accept as a senior because it brings love and friendship throughout both classes. -Loralei Craighead As of August 20th the classes of '87 and '90 were permanently united. Rituals of initiating freshmen have been passed on from generation to generation. Mrs. O'Rourke summed up Big Sister- Little Sister day as a marvelous time for creating lasting friendships between seniors and their little sisters. Relationships between sisters continued throughout the year. During freshman elections, Seniors could be seen wearing brightly col- ored freshman campaign buttons. They were determined to show their support. On that long-awaited day, flowers, hugs, and special wishes of luck from Big Sisters eased nerve-racking tension for can- didates.
