Sister lfinbar points out io this tlass in Latin I that .1 great num- ber ot' words in our Ifnglish language .ire derived from Latin. llUlllllllti llllllilllllg Latin, mother of romance languages, is the lan- guage that is associated with knowledge, culture, and all that is tlassical. Two years study of this dead language gives us a firm foundation, not only in our ovvn vernacular, but also in many other lan- guages, .md builds a classical foundation for further education. The Latin Club, associated with the Junior Classical League, is very active in promoting interest in the Latin classics and lore. The study of Latin trains the student in con- tentration and perseverance, virtues which bring rich rewards all through life, This is the vocabulary for today . . . joan ljlrich and Carol Terp are serious about their first course in Latin. f The host part of the aftqrnoon . . . lllith XY'0rccStcr, lo Ann Hem- strcct, Helen jones, Daisy Gonzal- ez, .md Pat Murphy are hostcsscs .lt .1 tel given in the art room by fha lfrcnuh flluh, l.c Ccrnlc Fran- mais. . . ,,. ln lfrc-nlh l Llllll ll wcxtL1llx'ncmt only thc French l.1n Qll.lQ ', . THE LANGIIAGE OE OUR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS Spanish I, II, and III offer an exciting study of the language, the colorful customs, and the culture of our South of the border neighbors, Interesting discussions on the history, traditions, and literature of Spain, Mexico, and the south western part of the Ifnited States, are held in our Spanish classes. These discussions give an opportunity to get in an amount of practice in spontaneous speaking of the language. The Spanish Club, which is made up of all students uf Spanish sponsors many projects, such as the Mexican supper, and the buying of useful gifts for the school and the students. The P. IZ. classes of the current year mostly participat- ed in intramural games of volleyball and basketball. In January a varsity basketball team was formed under the direction of Mrs. Somrners assisted by Sister Mary Mark. After a week of practice this team was challenged by St. Gerard's team. Later they played St. Marys of Austin, St. Teresas, and Providence. lncarnate XY'ord High School has known defeat, but in those losing efforts fair play and sportsmanship have remained the keynote. At Incarnate XVord High team spirit runs high and those of us who are not active ball players lend the team our full support. Led by enthusiastic cheerleaders we do our part by cheering our team on to victory. 'lo Ann Hemstreet and Georgia Ann Miller are adept at shuffleboarcl. Volleyball champions . . . D. Gonzalez, P.
