We uhrolce the tape as sophomores: we watched the campus grow from dusty paths and debris to smooth roadways winding through landscaped lawns But we experienced our greatest joy in watching the growing esteem for our heloved school, ioylully building from day to day its uesprit de corps. We reached out for guidance and found the waiting. helping hands of our parents and teachers. Through their gentle yet firm encouragement, their insistence on correct principles and practices of conduct, we carry with us from our unforgettable high school days . . . Happiness, Knowledge. and Sanctity. But we must leave our cradle of Knowledge, and release the guiding hands, but lest we forget . . . And judg- ing from the accomplishmentsof this group of l.VV.H.S. students, it must he true. The first major activity of the class was the Sports Dance held on September 25: this was a most successful and enjoyable event. To prove that they had excellent team work the juniors made an all out drive to secure ads for the Yearbook. In this, too, they were successful: securing the highest percentage and winning the class prize offered for this project. November 2, was the date of the Junior Silver Tea held at the home of Lois Kendriclcs. This project as well as all those carried out during the year, was for the pur- pose of securing funds for the two major Spring events ,- the Junior-Senior Banquet, and the Junior-Senior Prom. The Junior-Senior Banquet, held on April 26 in the Minuet Room of the Menger Hotel, is an occasion that will long he remembered hy all who were present. The Prom, Evening in Paris, was the rave of the whole com- munity. Nliniature Eiffel Towers, sidewall: cafes, and other Parisian motifs provided a very realistic atmosphere. It is no wonder that the eighth day of May in the Year of Our Lord, nineteen hundred fifty-three leaves a vivid trace of memory in the minds and hearts of the honorees and their hostesses -- the seniors and juniors of 1955. -are '15 X7 ' zu- f , .1 A Shirley Mae Barberio Rena Jo Baum San Antonio Mercedes Doris Lee Arlauclcle m f Susan Browne San Antonio ,5g,.,,N San Antonio 5 ..., e lg tm ' iffy? If you aslc one of the members, she will say it is popularity. Ask another, and another, and yet another, and you will always get the same reply. Hence one has to assume that there must be some truth in this conviction. Gloria Castella and Rita Hontgias have proved their popularity as Central cheerleaders: Barbara Pape did lilcewise as a Princess for the Military Bally Betty Martinez, Patsy Pugh, and Meredith Engel made a high rating as honorees and runners-up for a place of royalty at Central Junior-Senior Prom. When the princesses for the Selene Clubs Black and White Ball were announced, two of the prettiest were our own Margaret Morales, representing the Mexican Chamber of Commerce, and Mary Virginia fsisi Canales, princess of Rio Grande Valley, who was crowned Queen of the Ball. ln school life also, the sophomores distinguished them- selves. Fourteen were elected to probationary membership in the National Honor Society: this represents twenty percent of the class. So with one hall: of their high school days in the background, and one half to go, the sophomores should go far spiritually intellectually, and socially. H ome Room Sponsor jk? jl'e5Ll'l'l6ll'l KZGA5 On our first day of school, we, the green and jittery freshmen, entered the room which was to be our home classroom for the school year. Those of us who had been here in the eighth grade felt very confident, but the new girls were rather fearful, although very joyful at the thought of being now in high school. Of course, with all of us, there was a mixture of joy and fear as we started the school year. We were afraid of our more advanced studies, afraid of the many hardships ahead of us, but happy that we were now in high school, and in such a high school as Mount Erin. We remember our feeling of superiority as we taclcled algebra problems, and spoke a few words of a foreign language. We really felt lilce very superior people until the first six weelcs' tests: then we settled down and began to realize we didn't lmow all the answers. We, freshmen, have a few things to brag about. First of all, we are the largest freshman class ever to enroll at l.VV.H.S. We have shown a fine spirit whenever we were needed, such as in choir work, in athletics, and in our attendance at all school functions. One of our popular members, Mary Frances Gordon, was chosen Queen of the Central Junior-Senior Prom, a unique honor for a freshman. Several of our classmates toolc part in the Junior Pioneers' Style Show, sponsored by the Texas Pioneers. And if you attended THE TALK OF THE TOWN, the Alamo Heights Lions' Club's program, you saw a large number of freshmen giving out their bird-like voices in the choruses. We sang the High Mass on Easter Sunday to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Very Reverend Celestine Strub, O.F.M., and several times during the year, we sang High Masses at the various Post Chapels here in San Antonio. We are grateful to all our teachers for their help and encouragement, and we are especially thankful that we were permitted to talce part in all these projects, particularly in the singing of the High Masses. We are also very grateful to our pastors who called on us to carry a share of their burdens by participating in Youth Club programs, and especially in teaching Catechism at Confratemity centers. To all we say a hearty Thani: you. and hope to see you all baclc here in September. -Catherine Mazzu s ns . . 5 .y X I i Judy Aldrete ary Anderson e e i k943-gf Sylvia Arredoncio an Antonio L ,,:, , Nanette Braunstein San Antonio .
