The DIPLOMAT would not be complete without men- tion of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hammer and the work crew on the Tabernacle grounds. The Hammers have worked tirelessly for years to make this a place of real beauty and comfort-a place which serves Festival-goers, local Church brethren, Imperial Schools, and now, the Summer Educational Program. Mr. Hammer, as Church Business Manager and Super- intendent of Grounds, and Mrs. Hammer, as head of the kitchen staff, have been particularly helpful in this bold new venture-the first summer camp sponsored by Imperial Schools and the Church of God. Here were true pioneers-200 specially chosen students from many states, from Canada, and from England-who gathered to learn such skills as swimming, skiing, canoeing, fishing, camping, crafts, and music. Here were pioneers who labored to make future camps even more enjoyable and profitable, here were students who came to learn to be responsive to authority, to learn the value of good manners and self-control. They came to learn to develop qualities of leadership and to build strong and healthy bodies. They came to serve and to have fun together. Many joined with the work crew and with the Gladewater Church brethren to clear the bowl area for a future lake. The goals of the Summer Educational Program proved to be no idle dream. After eight weeks of intensive train- ing, young lives had been changed. Many had grown in character and in knowledge, many are now better equipped to serve themselves and others. In this way, too, Imperial Schools have had a greater part in serving the entire Church. r' vli- gf IMPERIAL SCHOOH , aa . .r A I ni!'!i9B fi 1
