M, Z. can Brotherhood One can see the love between two brothers having the same parents or having the same race or creed or native birth. It's easy and quite natural for us to have a bond with someone having the same interest and very unnatural for us to share this bond of brotherhood with someone who is not in the same class. As one views the issue of universal brotherhood, one does not have to look far to see the discrimination, the lonelynesstthe wars that are rampant throughout the world, and discover that this is but an idea, a concept that seems to be intangible. Because we believe that this concept is tangible, the Staff of Counsels 1972 has selected Brotherhood as the theme of this yearbook. We would like to re-assert the necessity for a strong belief in the brotherhood of man. People live together-race with race, creed with creed, nation with nation-and try, with varying success, to help each other. But the vigor, the fullheartedness of our effort is not too clearly manifest. ls the poverty of so many of our brothers as inescapable as it seems to those who must endure it? Must hunger be the lot of so many-even in our own richly endowed country? And war, riots, bloodshed and hatred-are these outside the scope of brother- hood? We must assert again the need for a more vital brotherhood. We must listen more fervently to that internal voice which demands that we look upon every human ,person as being worthy of our respect and our love. Only as we look upon every man and love him for the human being that he is, only as we respect him for that touch of the immortal which is implanted in each of us, only then can we engage in truly fraternal work. We pledge ourselves to this renewal of brotherhood with all the moral vigor that God grants to those who do His work. -5 .i X--.. f 'v acult . . wish from now on to become conscious of all that thevworld loves, pursues and suffers. The Liturgical Commission plays an important part in the spiritual life and liturgy of the seminarians. The -,purpose of the Commission is to give the students a greater awareness and participation in the liturgy and to help them more fully understand it. Under the coordination of Frater Robert Markunas, the commission is effective in that it adds and gives more variety to the religious functions in the seminary.. The liturgy becomes more and more the students liturgy through the efforts of this club. Speech Coinciding closely with the ideals of the Dehon Debating Society is the Immacu- late Heart of Mary Speech Club. Both these organizations strive to develop the imagina- tion, alertness, and public speaking abilities of the seminarians and at the same time help to foster the idea of healthy competition. Founded in 1962, this club has participated an- nually in both the Diocesan and State Speech Festivals, All seminarians are eligible to join and participate in either one or both of the above mentioned festivals. The categories which are offered are: original oration, poetry reading, extemporaneous speaking, radio b . . . . roadcasting, dramatic monologue, humorous prose, prose reading, and group discussion. This club has brought many honors to the school including two gold medals and four silver medals won this year in the Diocesan Festival. it n W' Speech Semi-Finalists: Cstandingj Brian Stolte, Craig McKee, Gerard Hefner George Boisse Ed- ward Kilianskig Ckneelingj Robert Borstelmann, William Lambe, Christopher Diaz. i Explorers One of the most popular and energetic clubs here at Bellefontaine is the Explorer Post. The explorer program fits in very well with sem- inary life since it promotes good leadership and respon- sibility in the individual members. Fifty-two young men who meet twice a month to discuss their activity plans constitute Post lOl. These explorers T contribute much of their time and hard work to the success of the post. The activities this year in- cluded several hikes to Bear Town Mountain, a trip to the Explorer Officers: Mr. Mendel, Michael Perry, Fr. Krah, Edward Prybylski, Walter Springfield Hall of Fame, Lukasik, and Robert Piemock. and a day at the armory. All m ft these trips will lead up to a super activity in which some of the explorers will partici- pate at the end of the year. Our Explorer Post helps these young men to grow with the riddles of nature and aids them in overcoming the many obstacles which one confronts in the wilderness. The Explorers: fback rowj Mike Frisco, Marty Cummings, Rick Pfeiffer, Rich Roman, Mike Read, Mark Thompson, john Jackson, Craig McKee, Harry McAllister, Ed Kilianski, Gerry Hefner, Charlie Gallagher, Doug Watson, Joe DiPeri, Dom Speca, George Boisse, Frater Tim Gray, Matt Torrey, Tim Ryan, Andy O'Neill, Kevin Horan, Charlie Samolinski, Joe Laflammeg Cfront rowj Matt Wilkowski, Bill Lambe, Bob Bresnahan, Paul Krug, Tom Lambe, Ken Pilla, Luis Valentin, joe Adams, Tim Colberg, Paul Wilson, Louis Comeau, joe Price, Mike Shuler, Fred Ramsey, and Bob Borstelmann. The Dehon Debating Society is a member of the Springfield Diocese and Speech League and the Berkshire Forensic League. Under the guid- ance of Father Walter Na- bity, the debate team has done well in its competi- tion throughout Western Massachusetts. This club gives the individual de- bater a chance to become an effective speaker in this free society which de- mands advocacy.
