We have but to look upward to see, above the horizon of commonplace purpose, the nobler, loftier, worthier motives that urge us on in our quest for immutable values to put mean- ing into our lives and our destinies. A Catholic education has lifted our eyes and our hearts up toward these eternal values. It has pointed out to us the ideals that fash- ion our souls after the image of Christ through the practice of Christian virtues, ideals that instill truth within our minds and equip the hands with useful skills through the challenge of diligent and persistent effort, ideals that foster friendships through the lessons of courtesy and generosity, ideals that build the body and the soul through the disci- pline of genuine sportsmanship. Graduation marks a transition from the school of preparation to the school of life- a transition that involves new interests and experiences. On this new, untrodden road, we need great ideals to light the way and guide us unmistakably to our goal. This we pledge ourselves today: To keep the gaze of our souls fixed upward on these heavenly beacons, to believe in them, and to cherish them always. And as we stand at the cross- roads of the present and the future, we dedi- cate our sincerest endeavor to the fullest possible realization in our lives of these our Vilmarian ideals.
