During These Two years, We The People are launching upon a program oT educaTion concerning This greaT naTional documenT which Tor a cenTury and a haIT has sTood every TesTg which, Tor a cenTury and a haIT has been an unTaiIing guide Through The weakness oT naTional inTancy, The sTress oT Terrible war beTween The sTaTes, Through crises aT home and abroad. We, as sTudenTs, consider iT a privi- lege, an unusual opporTuniTy granTed To us This year and nexT, To be able under proper guidance To Trace The origin oT our ConsTiTuTion, To sTudy wiTh The proper appreciaTion The hisTorical seTTing Trom which This greaT documenT has developed, To become acguainTed wiTh The men who ren- dered service in ThaT greaT convenTiong To analyze The sTruggIe Tor raTiTi- caTion and The sTeps in The growTh oT our counTry which has now reached The pinnacle oT world leadership. CerTainIy such a sTudy cannoT help buT resuIT in someThing greaTer Than mere Icnowledge and undersTandingg namely, a new inspiraTion and a deeper appreciaTion, boTh oT which are so essenTial during These Times when represenTaTive governmenTs, The world over, are Tacing crucial siTuaTions. WiTh This end in view The SesquicenTennial Commission will spread The celebraTion To every secTion oT The UniTed STaTes, To iTs TerriTories, and island possessions. Each and every ciTy, sTaTe and privaTe insTiTuTion is being aslced To parTicipaTe in The program oT evenTs aT some Time beTween SepTember, IQ37 and April, l939. IT is my pleasure To say ThaT we oT The Academy have already played a parT in This greaT ConsTiTuTional drama. SepTember I7 was seT aside as ConsTiTuTion Day, given over To a PaTrioTic Assembly Program. I-Iere, sTudenTs who had made a Thorough sTudy oT The ConsTiTuTion discussed The imporTance oT ThaT living organ and iTs eTTecT upon each individuals daily IiTe. IT seemed ThaT we had become accusTomed To approach The ConsTiTuTion as someThing oT special imporT To The people in The nexT block, or To some parTicuIar person oT prominence, some special inTeresT or class. I-lowever, on closer scruTiny, we were led To see ThaT every word in ThaT ConsTiTuTion was wriTTen Tor us as plain living individuals.
