'Q' rgfxg lg, .- ,P-11345: xv! I Athletics have a prominent place in all thirty high schools staffed by the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth. The values to be derived from them are fairly obvious: co-operation, spirit, loyalty, sublima- tion of the individual to the good of the whole. The body, so closely connected with the mind, must be kept in good condition if a healthy personality is to be the result. Sisters preparing for elementary school teaching take courses in organized recreation to prepare them- selves for directing children's games during recess periods or in the schoolyard before school sessions. Sisters teaching in secondary schools sometimes serve as basketball coaches, however, in most schools they act as moderators for sports activities and cheerlead- ing, accompanying the girls' teams to and from games, and overseeing the arrangements made for the reception of visiting teams. Sister Ann julia, pic- tured on this page on her way to a game with the girls' basketball team, spends a considerable amount of time arranging the basketball schedule, attending practices, going to games, and devising ways and means for financial support of the team, which could be much more solidly supported by Immaculate rooters. All of our Sisters are very much interested in the fortunes of all the teams. Afternoon basketball games always find them in the balcony of the gym watch- ing apparently muddle-headed students execute bril- liant plays. On Sunday afternoons in October and November their trained ears are the first to detect the triumphant horn blasts in the distance, proclaiming victory at Immaculate Conception Field. And they eagerly scan the pages of the Montclair Times for news of the teams all year ,round. If they cannot always give evidence of ther interest by their presence at games, they certainly compensate for this in many other ways. TI-ILETIC
