THE H946 HMMACULATA Q2 Published by The Senimr Class IMMACULATE CCONCCIEPTJION H Il CG H S QC H O O L Montclair, New Hersey POREWURD WE, THE CLASS OF 1946, take pride in continuing the tradition of present- ing the annual Senior Year Book, The Immaculataf' Our purpose in planning and publishing this volume has been to recall in picture and print the story of our lives as students at the Immaculate Con- ception High School. The Priests, Sisters and other members of the faculty who gave so generously of their time and efforts in our behalf will always be remem- bered with thoughts of cordial gratitude. Our Student Organizations which mapped out and fostered the various programs and activities merit our thanks and congratulations. The religious exercises - the daily scholastic routine - the athletic events - the social gatherings, formal and informal - our moods, at times serious - sometimes li hthearted and a - now lau hin - now Worr in 3 these 3 S Y S S Y 3 are the elements that were part and parcel of our school days at Immacu- late. These are the memories which are enshrined in this book. Four years of happiness are pictured and printed in this volume, which in years to come will be a joyful reminder of our student life at our beloved Immaculate Conception High School. CHURCH AND SCHOUL THF. SUBLIME MISSION of the Cath- olic Church is to establish the Kingdom of God upon earth. To win the World for Christ, to establish the principles of Chris- tianity in every walk of life, to bring peace and happiness to all men, are her constant purpose and objective. Opposition and difliculties surround Her on all sides, yet She surges forward with Her message of truth. The purpose of the Immaculate Con- ception High School is to train young men and women to be dynamic exponents of Catholicity, able and willing to advance the work of the Church in society. We, who have had the privilege of at-- tending Immaculate, realize the sacred purpose of our education. This end has been very clearly exhibited to us by the direction of all our studies and activities to the honor and glory of God. Our religious studies have given us a fuller knowledge of the truths we must believe and the duties we must perform to merit eternal salvation. But mere knowl- edge of what we must do is not enough to constitute a Catholic education. It must be supplemented by a far more important ele- ment, a fostering of fidelity to religious obligations. We have received this through our various religious exercises. It is this close relationship of Church and School, under the everguiding patron- age of our Immaculate Mother, that has produced such wonderful champions of Christ from our school in the past. Now our time to go forth has come, and it is our fervent prayer, that we, armed with the powerful weapon of a Catholic education, will be able to uphold the past traditions of Immaculate Conception High School, and make a valuable contribution to the spreading of Christ's Kingdom on earth. SALLY O'CONNELL DIEDIICCATIION ' To the Reverend john A. Munley, who in his first year at Hlmmaculatel' as a true Shepherd of his flock, exerted a Christlike zeal and a kindly interest in all our undertakings and by his friendly guidance was ever willing to advance and support every activity that was for our spiritual or temporal welfare, We, the class of 1946, gratefully dedicate this Year Book. THE STUDENT SPIRITUAL COUNCIL The Student Spirit- ual Council, composed of the Commit- tee Chairmen, President, Vice-Presi- dent and Secretary-Treasurer of the Sodality, meets once a week to discuss programs for the monthly meeting and to plan Sodality activities. These are under the supervision of the Sodality Moderator and Director. THE EUCHARISTIC COMMITTEE The aim of the Eucharistic Com- mittee is to spread devotion to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. This end is achieved partly by the Euchar- istic Society of the Knights and Hand- maids, by encouraging the devotion of the First Friday, andby triduums of Masses and Communions before some of the great feasts of the Church. OUR LADY'S COMMITTEE Our Lady's Committee, through the Living Rosary, which is held in Oc- tober, urges Sodalists to recite the Rosary frequently and daily if possible. The burning of petitions and crowning of Our Blessed Lady, Queen of May, help to stimulate and increase devo- tion to the Queen of the Sodality. SOCIAL LIFE COMMITTEE The purpose of the Social Life Commit- tee is to promote and plan the social activities within the school program. During the current year, the Freshmen Initiation planned by the members of this committee was iirst on the school program, followed by the usual Noon- Time Dancing. Also, the Social Life Committee shared in planning enter- tainment for the sodality meetings held early in the semester. The desire of the present committee is that its successor will feature more prominently in the life of the students at Immaculate. S Page Forty-tivo THE LIBRARY COMMITTEE The library is rapidly becoming the cultural center of Immaculate. Daily students may be seen scanning the shelves seeking information on various topics. The goal of the present commit- tee is to improve the library and to in- still interest in its departments. THE MISSION COMMITTEE Christian zeal for the Foreign Missions is instigated in the students through the Mission Committee. The committee, has for its purposes, the conversion of non-christians through the medium of prayers and financial help. THE CATHOLIC LITERATURE COMMITTEE The primary purposes of the Catholic Literature Connnittee are: To help the students know the value of good reading. To promote the reading of Catholic books and periodicals. This committee carries on its crusade for Catholic Living through Catholic Literature. THE NEWSPAPER STAFF This year our school newspaper the Immac- ulata, was more appealing than ever because it was printed and its general makeup was more closely styled on that of a regular paper. An eflicient Staff carefully coached by its moderator made an excellent news coverage of all the various school activities and presented these events in a very informative man- ner. Indeed the Immaculata played an important part in our school life this year and it is hoped that its present high standard will be continued. THE PUBLICITY COMMITTEE This committee endeavors to familiarize the students with the activi- ties of the Sodality through posters. LOOKING AT THE RECORD of three wins and six losses, the sixth edition of the Immaculate Conception High School Football Team was not too victorious, but in many ways, the season itself was a huge success. The team was cited and congratulated for its grand sportsmanship by many olli- cials and opposing coaches and players. It scored more points than any other squad in Immaculate grid history. Its very strong following of spectators both at home and away games proved that the squads excellent playing as a team, and its lighting spirit, were appreciated. Highlight of the year was our de- cision over Caldwell, winner of the Greater Newark Tournament. lfVe also racked up two wins against Union Coun- ty's Powerhouse and our arch-rivals, St. Mary's of Elizabeth. The team lost a tough battle to a highly-touted Belleville team, but sprang back with a sizzling trouncing ol' Newark Academy by the toll ol' l9-0. Like so many teams ol' that time we were hit by severe losses. Ours, fortunately. came near the end ol' the season. Lefty Bill Davidson, winner of the Most Valu- able Player Award, was the first to leave, closely followed by his buddy and co- captain, Red Bill Corcoran. The last to leave was Fred Merklin. Prospects of an excellent season this year are likely, with eight letter winners returning. Ray Schultz, Dick Borquist, Pa 0 Fifty-two and Whitey McMahon, take care of the infield, ably assisted by Bob Lubin and Dick Tarrant in the outfield. Two other hold-overs comprising the battery, are Bill Sugrue and Bill Harvey. With this good material and the team working as a unit we can't hope for any- thing but bettering last year's very good record. First How-Dick Borquist, Patil Hughes. TRACK WITH ONLY TWO returning lettermen and a squad composed mostly of Fresh- men and Sophomores, the 1945 Track Team completed its season with a record of three victories and four defeats. While sustaining'wins over Pope Pius High, and Passaic Valley, the team suf- fered losses at the hands of such powerful teams as, St. Peter's Prep, Newark Acad- emy, North Arlington High, and Queen of Peace.
