They have becn half at war and half at home. llut thc result has been for many a half-hearted effort in strife and a half-hearted gesture toward the home. Your homes. l hope and pray. have been spared the tragedy of divided cH'ort because your homes are the most precious influence for good in the nation. The schools. libraries. institutions of art and sciences. industries. agriculture of America: our vaunted freedom and progress. are all built on sand if we do not preserve the greatest of all American heritages--the home. As you. the Class of l9ef5. leave lmmaculate's pleasant environment. pleasc l beg of you. keep in mind that lmma- culate 'has been planned as a phase of your home life. the day time activity of the family pattern where our llear Lord is the unseen Teacher. the unseen Listener to your conver- sations. the unseen Prompter at your examinations. A bomber doesn't get through because the pilot is good. or the gunner: it gets through because they all do their jobs. And behind the crew are the hun- dreds who trained them. built their plane. supplied their weapons. This should be an old story to Catholics. Saint Paul ex- plained a long time ago that if one member suffers any- thing. all the members stiffer with it. or if one member glories. all the members rejoice with it. I Cor. l2:26. We have known through all the centuries that we are members of the Body of Christ which is His Church. And so we all depend upon you. You are really nnlch ntore than a class which happens to be graduating this spring. You are members of the same Body of Christ as the rest of us: your defeats injure us. your victories will save us. You have more to gain and more to lose than your min souls: if you should fail the flame in our souls will burn a little less brightly: if you conquer. as you nlust. we shall share your victory. FR.
