The following morning l.C. floats rolled down York road. The Freshman Stamp was neatly built, while Sophomores took a more difficult challenge by Leaping to a Victory with their frog. X X Es I.C. Administration, always willing to try something new, decided to end the race to the mailbox this year by delivering the fateful REPORTS into the parents' hands. Having to look the teachers straight in the eye was good for some parents and not-so-good for others. For a few parents, it was the first time they had EVER seen a report card first hand instead of a glowing report by an industrious stu- dent who had just happened to misplace the entire day's mail after checking it out - carefully! One noticeable result is the chewed fingernails and torn hair of the students waiting at home. Student Life 17 Meeting new people and remeeting old friends seemed the order of the day when freshmen got together for their RETREAT and were properly welcomed to the student body at FRESHMAN INITIATION. Both were great ways of combining friendship with fun and new experiences. Sophomores were able to reminisce about the freshman year they survived when they had their retreat at the Bridge. lt's not often we take the time out of our hectic schedules and are thankful for all we do have. We're lucky to be given this opportuni- ty and smiling faces show the result. .S is --.Q Y... . .2 g sg ff Student Life 19 t 5 i 1 2 'X s This year the Knights of the West Division won themselves a berth in the Suburban Catholic Conference CHAMPION- SHIP GAME across from the Marist Red- skins ofthe East Division. The week before the game was one of great enthusiasm. Friday climaxed the week with a spirited pep rally, a spirit march through the school, and a parade of students who went to watch and cheer their Knights through their last practice before the big game. On Saturday, l.C.'s home field, filled with fans, provided the setting for a tough, hard-hitting contest between two fine teams. Then, as the final seconds ticked off the clock, the result was seen: the game ended, much to everyone's amazement, in a 12-12 tie. 20 Student Life Wx x. ,, f 2 Y if' ig f Bc b Y T4 if :Q iff ,limi Q Z 5- A , . C. 's lower level came alive with the sounds of happy people and the soul of Stone Ground Kelly . The occa- sion was the annual MARDI GRAS, sponsored by French Club. This year, contestants for King 84 Queen were eliminated by competing in games like hot potato and popping balloons, in- stead of popular couples being voted as such by their classes. Booths ranged from delicious French pastries to racing your own Nlotoriffic car, along with various raffles. Oneof the highlights ofthe evening was a raffle in which teachers gave the students a break from some homework assignments and tests! Student Life 23 Service, Leadership, Scholarship, Character. These are the four requirements for admission into the NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY. The Junior inductees held a trial at the induction and all twenty two applicants were found guilty of these four virtues. Fr. Foy told all present ofthe need of involvement in all aspects of life, be it in the family, school, community or nation. He also pointed out the need for change, but only through the system. As the seniors pinned the juniors, the senior girls received roses. The induction then came to the long awaited hour, the refreshments. 24 Student Life Into early March the pounding of pipes and hammers continues as the renovating of part of the convent basement is completed. Back in the library, bookcases are made ready to move to the newly built basement for the RECONSTRUCTION of the LIBRARY there. The large former library will be transformed into a multi-purpose room with a sliding door. Also tentatively planned for the part of the basement now used as a religion classroom is the addition of the sewing machines and art desks ta- ken from the school. This will make two other large classrooms available and allow new courses to be offered. The future looks full of pro- mise for changes that will benefit everyone. Student Life 25 Like a slowly erupting volcano, a faint rumble grows to a shattering roar spilling out shrieking voices. Another I.C. pep rally has begun. PEP RALLIES here at I.C. not only consist of the outburst of bottled up energy, but also of the popular mock skits. Among the guests at ASSEMBLIES in the past were the George Williams College Volleyball team, Gymnastics Unlimited and a guest speaker from Junior Achievement. Mrs. Ferrara, an alderwoman of the first ward, was guest speaker at the Student Council Induction. And, of course, I.C. students were blessed with the annual Christmas skits by each class and our talented faculty. 26 Student Life NWQSWP 7 Q I as. . 1 I , . .QQQC ' , Zz' V , V L '51- Student Life 27 nylnwdqlnrdu 1 ,,,,,-nf V. i Dil LJ! mind expansion 29 Don't let a participle dangle and always be sure to use the correct tense! These are a few of the rules that are being taught year after year in our ENGLISH department, much to everyone's dismay. Hey, have you read any great books lately? Of course you have. The literature courses extend from early myths during freshman year to English greats, such as Beowulf ' in senior English. If you're not interested though, there are always Cliff Notes! By the way, what's the news? Look it up in the Knight Times. The JOURNALISM class learns many facets of newspaper writing and uses its talents in assembling newspapers. 30 Mind Expansion W- M111 CEL, v M Mind Expansion 31 32 Nlind Expansion This year, the RELIGION depart- ment's emphasis is on the understand ing of the Christian faith, in order to provide an atmosphere in which students can probe and question their faith in relation to present experi- ences. This was achieved by a more academic approach than years before Each class level has four different topics which relate to the general theme for the year, taught by four different teachers who specialize in that field. A new member of the Religion department is Miss Sharon Stancl. Planned for the future is a Religious Training Center, which will be housed in the convent when the new classrooms are finished. With them they have brought a new method of teaching - that of inquiry on the part of the student. Anyone lVlr. Kelly taught knows how frustrating his class can be because definite conclusions are never reached. This method forces students to think for themselves. Introductory Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are offered in the course of the four year program. An expansion of the Physical Science course along with more extensive equipment should dynamize the science department. Robert Muellner returns to challenge those inquisitive minds who view math as an important part of theirfuture. f Much profound thinking goes into problem solving and many times seek- ing answers becomes totally exasper- ating. By his third or fourth year of math, the student learns to regard the teacher only as an advisor, and becomes thoroughly involved in find- ing the solutions on his own. This not only gives the student a feeling of self-satisfaction, but the teacher receives a feeling of self-pride and accomplishment. 36 Mind Expansion ill1nq..m: f A M NK N iq K J MWWW NWWWM 1 I W -,mu K W Si x EET k-kk'.. 1-f S. As is often the case, the first two years of a language at I.C. deal mainly with the structure of the language. Club days, when language clubs schedule programs studying different people and their languages, more interesting aspects of the language are introduced. With the help of the lab he will someday master the language that he stumbles over now. Because of the small size of the classes, the last two years of a language are most interesting. Individual attention helps the language classes to study in depth what would ordinarily be skimmed The language department at I.C. is doing its part to prepare students to communicate in a world that is growing ever smaller. lVlind Expansion 39 40 Mind Expansion ML. an Vzrr .. ,of lv. Instead of studying events in chronological order, stu- dents, with Mr. Pavlou and the text, The American Experience, are probing the reasons for certain cultural developments in the United States. Hopefully, this method will give the student a better understanding of his heritage. Mr. Anderson's classes could be considered the controls because they use a book that follows the course of history. Paralleling the Seniors' four- step course is a required Freshman HUMANITIES survey. Speech, Health, Music and Art Appreciation are taught by Mr. Pavlou, Mrs. Irene Jennings, Sr. Agnes Cecile and Sr. Julienne, respectively. As usual, contributing to the Night of Jewels fund has been a major effort of Student Council. This year a new event called work- day was initiated, letting students find employment for a specified free-day in order to give the fruits of their labors to the fund. Most aspects of this project were more favorable than selling items because each student is inevitably involved. Other Council business includes organizing charitable drives, social activities, and endless discussions about which project to undertake next. The varsity was led by Rick Levan, who was hampered most of the season by a bad leg, and Pat Schuch, while the frosh- soph team was led by Richard Grobe, who helped out on varsity, d Tim Curran, who was the number one runner when Grobe ran var- sity. The varsity, with an over-all record of five wins and four losses and a conference record of three wins and four losses, put forth an enthusiastic effort as well as a desire to win. This year though, was mainly a year for building. The frosh-soph team showed that IC can soon look for better records. Competition 73 This year's BASKETBALL team suffered some disappointing setbacks, but on the whole was a good team. In the Thanksgiving Tournament, the Knights finished second, and pulled another second in the Timothy Christian Holiday Tournament. After dis- heartening setbacks in conference play at the hands of Benet Academy and St. Edward, the Knights still had a chance to tie for first place in the conference. After losing to St. Edward for a second time, the Knights went on to finish in second place of the West Division. I if, 5 ' 3 'K cg: 5 Rx ,- . With much of last year's team returning, the Knights, now under the direction of Coach Frank Caliendo, could conceivably win themselves another first place in the West Division. The TRACK team also promises to be a first place contender. Winning factors include a strong sophomore Cross Country team and direction from Coach Paul Zientarski. The GOLF team this year is presenting a new image. There is no division between Frosh-Soph and Varsity teams: instead all golf members will be part of the whole l.C. Golf Team.
