A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth's sweet flowing breast A tree that looks at God all day And lifts her leafy arms to prayg A tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hairg Upon whose bosom snow has laing IfVho intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree. JOYCE KILMER 4 Ll? 21442 We, the class of 1944, have chosen as the theme for our yearbook, the tree. The tree symbolizes for us the road of life. As we travel along we will find that in all things, no matter what we undertake, we begin as the acorn and gradually work ourselves up until finally we emerge as the tree, powerful and mighty. So it was in school. Each year we grew a little more acquiring added nourishment, as we went along, from our roots, the faculty. just as the branches of the tree provide the beauty of the tree, our branches, activities which have been many and varied, provide the relaxation and amusement. Later we will find opportunity to travel another road and when we do we trust that we will have the courage and the fortitude to grow and continue to grow as the tree, until one day we will reach the peak of the tree of life. If we imitate the living quality in the tree and forever keep our determination alive, we will find ourselves well established on the road of life and our ambition will one day be satisfied. And so, with the tree as our symbol, we step out into the world with our branches eagerly outstretched to God. 5 Q54 QAAFGAGQAGQAAKQ G 15 Q 45 12 12 45 Dedication We, the Class of 1944, gratefully dedicate this fifteenth volume of the IMMACULATA, to the Faculty, our beloved friends and teachers, whose guidance and friendly manners have aided us during our high school years and who will continue to be an incen- tive to higher and better things in the years to come. May God bless them always. 6 Immaculate: Staff AWLQL MM Associate Editors NIARY YVHITE, ANN BRADY Class Historians MARY NIARGARET PATRICK, PATRICIA FURTNEY ELEANOR VISOCKY DOROTHY NEVILLE JULIA CONNELL DICK ASH CLEMENT HUDOCK LAVERNE KING Feature Editor ANN BAILEY Assistants ANN DAILEY ROSEMARY FRAZIER ELI-:ANoR BARONICK LAWRENCE MAY RUTH MEIDEL LUCILLE CLIFFORD Snap-shot Editor SARA ANN BRIIIL Literary A dviser SISTER M. The Freshman Class Early in the fall ol' ISH3, a quantity ol' acorns was hopefully planted. Although the routine was very new to them, they soon began to grow in the ways of the school in which they were to take root. History, Latin, English, algebra, and general science nourished them and they quickly showed signs of becoming promising trees. These young seeds bloomed in the Crusaders for Christ Club. They ransomed a heathen baby and distributed over 150 booklets during the Rosary Crusade. An assembly entitled nClLllll0Llil21gC,,l was presented and proved to be a real success. 15 S1iEDI.INGS First llozv: Nlullztney. D. l.1tnt':tster, Smith, Steindl, R. ixllfclllfllllfli, XY. This was done through the medium ol SlllJjCCtS such as Latin, Eng- lish, biology, algebra, and history. Little by little, these young plants waxed strong and became wise. The Catholic Action Club was reorganized by them. One ol the main events sponsored by this club was the reading ol many pamph- lets which were reported on by various members. A prize was awarded for the best report. 16 WEI.I. ON THEIR WAY Firsl Ilona' Ranker, li. Xlcliitricla, R. Dailey, D. lloyd. R. llellre. li. Nolan. SITUIIII Roni: T. Helms, Y. Dragon, IS. Neville, H. Colorful posters relative to various phases ol' the old tale were sub- mitted hy the class. At the beginning ol' the school year, the sophomores initiated their younger brothers and sisters, the freshmen. This proved to he a delightful event and was carried out at the first sophomore assem- hly. The second performance in which the sophomores appeared was the assembly held on St. Patricks Day. Now, as they prepare to leave this sunny room, they can't help wondering what lies in store lor them. XVhatever it may he, you may rest assured that they will never forget the happy moments of their second year in high school. I7 YOUNG TREES . First Row: D. Collins, R. Costello, W. Sperry, M. They are anxiously looking forward to being the senior members of the school, thus they work earnestly to obtain their goal. The class oflicers have done a Hne job in leading the members of their group. The Mission Club officers, Rose Marie Brady, XVilbert McCary, .Iunie Bartholomai, and Betty Porter have also done well in col- lecting hundreds of stamps and many pounds of tin foil to help the missionaries. The annual class play, Almost Eighteen, was a tremendous success and an assembly produced in the early part of May was an enjoyable event. 18 SOON TO BLOSSOM How llllllly grznns did you say? liycs to llmc right Not loo fusl Bring in llxusc SUIIIIIJS lI's not lon lllllgll I9 LEAVES THAT HAVE FALLEN We, the seniovxs, zlerlicule this page of om' yeurboolc to five Q ' A' now serving in the zmnefl forces. former classmates who me PAUL S.-XNTINI rXR'l'HUR :XLBINE VlNLIl41N'l' I'1,xsr:c:K1 JACK CQIFFIN ' ' f THULONIAI JOSLPII BAR 20 ,N.,.,..,N,..-1-1-,XQ-Q-,,,..,..,.,-.0 p The Full Grown Tree . . . Days Gone By NVhile we sit in the senior room, memories of our past four years come slowly and vividly back to us. YVe're freshmen now! Sister Antoinette is principal and very much interested in the greenies. The Eucharistic Our Lady Club is being formed and we make a splendid start in our four years by being made knights and handmaids. The shining of shoes and the carrying of upperclassmates' books are ours at last. Wle have become sophisticated sophiesf' W'e start something new in the year of '42 and make the second day of the second week of the second month of the second year Sophomore Day. In between our study of Caesar and math we begin practice for our assembly entitled Too Many Marys and The Fatal Quest. It is a success and one of the best ever produced by sopho- mores. A promotion to juniors and the privilege of choosing our own subjects! Chemistry and working in the lab is a great thrill to the majority of the class. Learning the home keys and typing all of forty words a minute is something special to us and we consider ourselves super. The junior class play, The Bashful Bachelor, comes along now and although it takes much earnest practice it is a real success in the end. Ah! Seniors at last and a lot of work is to be done. Our studies are a little more difficult but we'll struggle on and make the grade. It's time for an assembly now and we have decided on an old-fash- ioned minstrel show. Dancing, singing, and jokes predominate in this showg it is a great hit with the student body. Time marches on and before we know it Color Day is just around the corner. We're practicing songs and speeches until they are perfect. At last it is here. Parents and relatives fill the auditorium. The program is a good one and all seniors are pleased. Senior play practice for The Mad March Heirs is here and lasts all during March. The play in April is a big success. Graduation is our worry now! Girls run to and fro looking for white dresses and boys sit lazily waiting for the day. -IUNE 4! Our diplomas are given to us and only now do we realize that there is a world waiting to swallow us up. W'e're on our own now and a feeling of fright and sorrow comes into our hearts. VVe leave with regret and appreciation to our faculty. 33 We Can Because We Think We Can COLOR DAY SPEECH By JOAN Hook It is customary for each class in the high school to have a motto which will help them achieve their goal and guide them over rough spots during high school and the oncoming years. When the class of '44 entered high school, the members chose a motto which they thought would spur them on to success in life. The motto that the class chose was this: VVe can because we think we can. We believe that our choice was a good one for this reason: If an individual has confidence that he is able to do his duties or to meet the difliculties that arise in life, the battle is partly won. An in- cident in the life of Napoleon demonstrates the statement I have just made. When Napoleon turned from his other European conquests to advance upon Italy, his soldiers scoffed at a venture so obviously impossible. You cannot cross the Alps! they told him. It is im- possible. But did he give in to their murmurings? No! YVith that dogged determination that characterized this very great general throughout all his career, he answered them grimly, There shall be no Alps! and led them on to certain victory. He did this because he thought he could. If we could develop confidence and determination like Napol- eon, many of our duties and troubles would be much easier to meet. But very few people have the determination that Napoleon had- Most of us get discouraged very easily and when our duties seem too heavy a burden and too many troubles come our way we often do not go bravely on with determination to do our best. In the war days ahead and the reconstruction days to follow, we will all, no doubt, meet some troubles or sorrow. Now is the time for us to meet small dis- appointments bravely, to perform small duties with determination that we will succeed in doing them to the best of our ability. If we do this then when larger troubles come our way they will be easier to surmount. So class, let's have the courage and determination we need to reach the ultimate goal, the salvation of our souls. Remember, We can because we think we can. 34 ............,,,..,,.. ....,,,,,,...,,,.,...,p The Branches of Uur Tree . . . -qQczfivz'z'L'e5 I, li IS A N H O N STUDENT COUNCIL HONOR GUILD 36 TO LEARN IS A BLESSING For The People, By The People President ........ ......... C. students have cooperated wholeheartedly with the bond drives and war loans. During the drive from September 7 to December 7, the students pledged seven Flying Jeeps, and with the 828,503.85 obtained, which was 87,503.85 in excess of the amount pledged, easily purchased them. For their splendid work during this campaign they received a special citation from the Treasury Department. When the Fourth NV ar Loan Drive commenced, each class again pledged a certain amount. The total this time was 159,221.25 In addition to the purchase of bonds and stamps the students have also shown their patriotism by participating in the collection of tin cans, newspapers and scrap. Warm Till Victory Is Ours Among our spiritual activities this year were several devotional campaigns inaugurated by the Student Council. Daily Mass and Communion days during October, Lent, and Mayg regular attend- ance at evening servicesg and the Family Rosaryi' campaign were some of the religious activities in which all the students participated. The Family Rosary was a pledge made by each student to have the Rosary recited aloud by the members of his family each day. The main purpose of all these campaigns was to invoke the aid of our Lord and the Blessed Mother to guide our boys in the service and to bring us all at last into the haven of peace. 38 JH COUNTRY IVE FLOUR1 TILL THE BOYS COME BACK WE PRAY F011 PEACE 39 4 1 I I' H15 W O H COLOR DAY -IUNIOR PLAY 410 IS BUT A STAGEJI The Beginning of the End The senior class has planted its roots deep in the field of dra- matics. The members of the class presented an interesting program and received their colors and flowers on Color Day. The senior assembly was also a Color Day. The members of the class represented Harlem lads and lassies and showed their abilities in a minstrel show. The many jokes, songs and humorous dialogues met with great success. Then came the great day, the date of the class play had arrived. The presentation of The Mad March Heirs was a howling suc- cess. Who knows, perhaps the class of '44 will produce some real professional actors and actresses some day. WMQNN The Time Is Now The auditorium lights were out, the curtain slowly opened and before a large audience the juniors presented their play, Almost Eighteen. Under the direction of Sister Marcella and Mrs. Charles Donnelly, the cast gave a performance that will long be remembered. Splendid performances were handed in by james Quinn as the fatherg Rosemarie Brady and Thelma Clifford as the two mothers who found it difficult to remain on good terms with two rival sons to raiseg and Mfilbert McCary, who with a pie forever in his hand and a problem forever on his mind, crept into the hearts of the audience.
