'V K xx-J .Ju Ls: r'1oNT f A fs Ufllngazl 5 cflu akenmg HE ANCESTRAL HOVIE of the Sher man famlly was a large old fashioned manslon situated on one of the quaint streets of Boston Just before the Revolutlon thls family had migrated from Sherman Manor ln England to their present residence The follow mg generations of Shermans had many t1m8S re modeled the old house but lt still retalned 1ts for mer a1r of statelmess and grandeur The youngest of the present generatlon of IH mates was Ablgall Sherman the Second so named for her great great grandmother Abigail Trent Sherman who had entered the old house as its first brlde directly after the Revolutlon Much to the chavrm of her mother the present young Ablgall was totally lndlfferent to her long llne of noble ancestors By a queer stroke of fate Ablgall the Flrst and Abxgall the Second had both been born on February twenty n1nth though over one hundred and fifty years apart And on this last day of February 1928 Abigail the Second was celebrat mg her fourth blrthday although she was slxteen years of age As the day was disagreeable out sxde she sat curled up before the drawlng room fire deeply engrossed ln a new book Above the fire place hung two huge portraits one of whlch was Abigail Trent Sherman the Flrst and the other Tracy Sherman her husband Presently growlng weary of the story the young great gl eat grand daughter lubbed her eyes and gazed wearxly upward at the two palntlngs As her namesake s llkeness confronted her she laughed a queer little laugh Ablgall the Fnst had stern blue eyes and through the lacy rufiles the girl could see a severe mouth that seemed to have forgotten the art of Smlllng Tracy Sherman at least ln por tralt appeared equally arlstocratlc although Ablgal the Second thought hlm quite a comical figure ln his elghteenth century clothes Silly old fogxes she said to herself Hou modern folks can make such a fuss over these old grouches that lned ages ago IS beyond me They must have had an awfully dull time in those days No romante adventure or anythmg And lf It hadn t been for her memory I wouldn t be burdened wlth the antiquated name Ablgalll How I hate it' So saymg she made a wry face at the stately old lady s image At this pomt Nlrs Sherman entered saymg Abigall my dear I have a l1ttle blrthday sur prlse for you In the attlc beslde the trundle bed IS a small trunk and all its contents now belong to you Here IS the key With eager anticipation, Ablgall took the llttle key whlch her mother handed her I hope you ll appreclate these treasures her mother contlnued w stfully as Ablgall laughmgly klssed her and dashed from the room The attlc door crcaked on its rusty hlnges as treasures aren t some old famxly albums Under the western gable she found the trunk which the hand of Time had not spared but the small s lver key turned easily ln the lock and the lid sprang open Beneath Ablgalls eager gaze was a mass of pale blue rufiies Drawmg lt forth she found It to be an exquisite old fashloned dress just b1g enough for her Excltedly she delw ed deeper and found a little hat with dellcate bows and ribbons and a trembly brim of the same shade Then she came upon a tlny parasol to match the rest of the costume Next her eager fingers brought forth a small trame Beneath the glassy sulface reposed a brown curl and a lock of golden hair In a glrllsh hand was wrltten under the curl Ablgall and beneath the golden one Tracy A damty sllver locket was the next thing vshlch Ablgall found Opening lt her gaze fell upon two 0XQl.1lSlte little mmlatures one of which was Abigail Trent The young namesake gasped with astomshment and delight for instead of the lan. 1 C - A 'X 15 I VT l ',: x if- -. 12 0 a f V - V - . .
