In man, LANGUAGE, THE MEANS OF communication among living beings and the key to communi- cation with the past, is a potent force in social life, making all peoples, areas, and communi- ties more than iust isolated individuals, it un- locks the treasure chest containing civilizations and cultures of ancient times. The study of classical Greek and Latin discloses the history, philosophy, and literature of the past-a time which will endure by reason of the unsur- passed genius of speculative theories and practical accomplishments. The influence of Plato, Aristotle, Phidias, Menander, Plautus, Cicero, Virgil, Seneca, and others is a living force in all phases of modern culture. It is primarily through a study of these languages that scholars have been able to reconstruct the past, giving to men of all times a background and a connective link to be used in explaining the present and in anticipating the future.
